Now Pat's What I Call Music! - Music Diaries

Patman360 · 2024-09-05T19:05:38-04:00

Arguably the stupidest thing I've done on here since I ranked all the Bond theme songs, but I'm back to having time for music so I'm setting out on a new venture! Yes, that's right, listening to and ranking the Now That's What I Call Music! albums, one track at time. I recently got shown a full playlist of all the Now albums and it brought up a lot of nostalgia (the 50's/60's Now album were early albums for me in my musical journey...). Anyway, while digging through the list I came across several bangers (and several 'non-bangers'), and it's inspired to dig through the archives, one song a day, every day, for the foreseeable future. Am I crazy? Yes, absolutely, but anyway, let's crack on! 1 Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9IwBJYTwQ0 Starting us off in 1983, with the original version of Now, is Phil Collins's covering The Supremes, quite enjoy this a lot in all honesty. Have been on a bit of a Genesis rediscovery journey of late and naturally that leads into Phil and his solo stuff. The man does make a good pop hit every so often (Easy Lover, dope), and I love the fact that he doesn't look remotely like a popstar (strikes me as more of an Eastenders character, plus he's got the name). Was on his 1982 album, Hello, I Must Be Going, which has made it onto a year chart of mine, and anyway, as the first song up, straight to number one with a bullet. Ranking: 1. Phil Collins -You Can't Hurry Love (Now 1)

There's some catchiness to be had here, but I'm not sure it's aged all that well...

Certainly no Return of the Mack.

Peter Andre - Natural

Link

The title track of Andre's debut album and his 7th and final single off it.

Not at the level of Mysterious Girl, but a fun time, more reggae influence or something of that ilk.

Very much at home in the 90's.

I made a commitment (a crazy one, but still), it's a nice 10 mins out of my day haha! Less than 30 years to go now also...

Damage - Love Guaranteed

Link

The 4th of 6 single off Forever, Damage's debut album, and the second to make the cut here.

Definitely the most smooth one so far, I actually find myself liking it quite a lot.

That nice blend of 90's R&B pop.

Eternal - Don't You Love Me

An 8th single from Eternal to feature here.

This is off their 3rd album, one of the better ones for sure.

Still wouldn't say I was overly enamoured with them, but it's not too bad.

One of those 90's hits you know and still gets played but you can't quite place.

East 17 - Hey Child

Link

East 17 have done alright in my books so far, but this is one of their poorer ones.

Released as a new single on a 1996 compilation album, Around the World, it caused more controversy than anything, with Brian Harvey being fired from the band after praising ecstasy while promoting the new single, no joke.

The band ended up being blacklisted on UK radio for awhile and would eventually break up in 1999 after another album (have obviously done several reunions since then and currently together in some form).

Boyzone - A Different Beat

Link

The title track and second single off Boyzone's second single, like most of their tracks it's Gately and Keating heavy.

Not sure how well it's aged, it's 5 lads from Dublin singing a lot about Africa, and the video is definitely dated too, but it's Boyzone so there's still some catchiness to be found in there, make of that what you will.

Backstreet Boys - Anywhere For You

Link

The 5th and final single off their debut album, coming out as a single about a month before NOW 36 released.

It's good, but they still had yet to find their peak, as we all know what's to come.

A good solid pop track nonetheless.
