Now Pat's What I Call Music! - Music Diaries

Patman360 · 2024-09-05T19:05:38-04:00

Arguably the stupidest thing I've done on here since I ranked all the Bond theme songs, but I'm back to having time for music so I'm setting out on a new venture! Yes, that's right, listening to and ranking the Now That's What I Call Music! albums, one track at time. I recently got shown a full playlist of all the Now albums and it brought up a lot of nostalgia (the 50's/60's Now album were early albums for me in my musical journey...). Anyway, while digging through the list I came across several bangers (and several 'non-bangers'), and it's inspired to dig through the archives, one song a day, every day, for the foreseeable future. Am I crazy? Yes, absolutely, but anyway, let's crack on! 1 Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9IwBJYTwQ0 Starting us off in 1983, with the original version of Now, is Phil Collins's covering The Supremes, quite enjoy this a lot in all honesty. Have been on a bit of a Genesis rediscovery journey of late and naturally that leads into Phil and his solo stuff. The man does make a good pop hit every so often (Easy Lover, dope), and I love the fact that he doesn't look remotely like a popstar (strikes me as more of an Eastenders character, plus he's got the name). Was on his 1982 album, Hello, I Must Be Going, which has made it onto a year chart of mine, and anyway, as the first song up, straight to number one with a bullet. Ranking: 1. Phil Collins -You Can't Hurry Love (Now 1)

911 - The Day We Find Love

Link

911's second entry off their debut album to make it on here and the 4th single from their first album.

Just a bit flatter and when you compare it to the Backstreet Boys before it the difference is noticeable.

Pretty forgettable in the end.

U2 - Discotheque

Link

A venture towards further new sounds from U2 in the 90's, following on from Achtung Baby and Zooropa, 4 years prior to this.

An interesting evolution, this was the lead single off 1997's Pop, I like it, wouldn't say I love it, but it's good and I probably enjoy U2 more than a lot of others.

Pop was their 9th album, coming out just 3 weeks before NOW 36 and their last album of the 90's.

Prodigy - Breathe

Link

A huge huge as the Prodigy moved properly into the mainstream I feel.

This was off The Fat of the Land, their 3rd album, and not the first single off it either, Firestarter having kickstarted it.

Breathe was a huge hit and still holds up today, off what is probably the Prodigy's strongest release.

I really really like it, scraping into the top 50.

The Chemical Brothers - Block Rockin' Beats

Link

Another huge hit that brought the Chemical Brothers into the popular music mainstream.

This is the second single off their second album, Dig Your Own Hole, the follow up to Setting Sun, which did hit number 1 and had lyrics by Oasis' own Noel Gallagher.

Block Rockin' Beats was the even bigger follow up single, also hitting number 1 but carrying more of a legacy.

Very good.

Placebo - Nancy Boy

Link

I can be a bit hit and miss when it comes to Placebo, but this is definitely one of their stronger entries.

This is one of their most successful singles, the 4th of their self titled debut album, and coming in an era where Britpop had firmly morphed into a sort of post-grunge alt rockin the UK I suppose.

A lot to like here.

Monaco - What Do You Want From Me?

Link

Very good stuff, Monaco was a side project put together by Peter Hook (then of New Order, formerly of Joy Division), and there's some noticeable similarities here, albeit with a slightly more poppy sound at times.

Very good, and I think I may own this as a single somewhere.

Sheryl Crow - Everyday Is A Winding Road

Link

Sheryl Crow's second single off her second album, and for me it's a banger.

This was the follow up to If It Makes You Happy, but I think it's easily her best track, classic pop with an ever so slight sprinkle of country.

Always holds up.

Blur - Beetlebum

Link

Blur's opening single off their 5th album, their self titled 1997 album.

A different vibe from Blur, very much after moving out of their Britpop era and into a newer type of sound, paving the way not just for Blur's future, but also Gorillaz, and even Albarn's other projects.

Whilst not my favourite Blur release, there's no denying it's still a very good track and a worthy album opener, Blur rarely miss in my eyes.

James - She's A Star

Link

The opening single off James' 7th album, Whiplash, and their 4th track to feature here.

James tried to adapt with the times (and are still trying), but never quite got their like the likes of Blur, nothing against them though.

Everything just lags a bit behind Sit Down really, this was their last top 10 single (besides a reworking of Sit Down).

Mansun - Wide Open Space

Link

I've been travelling so here's a very brief 4 to tide you over.

The 3rd of 5 single's of Mansun's debut album, Attack of the Grey Lantern (one of the 2 of theirs I have heard).

Middle of the road alt rock, another sign Britpop is coming to the end.
