Cover Songs: Side By Side

It's not all about songwriting. An important part of being an artist is sometimes knowing the right song to cover. This is for the covers that you dig, that you're glad the artist took the time and energy to do a song they didn't write. Or, to just compare cover versions to the original. Here's a starter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eU2GJeRxLUk From the album Solace by Sarah McLachlan Was surprised to hear her cover this song from 1967 by Donovan. I think she captured the spirit of it in a modern vein. His original, from the album A Gift From A Flower To A Garden, is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bmruh9tKxM

One of my favourite "guitar" tracks of all time and a very good jazz "sax" version from this year.

Love them both in different ways

That may be the most unblues version of a great blues song ever recorded. Zero feel from Dream Syndicate.

I'd say that they weren't trying to be bluesy at all. I'm guessing that's sort of the point. I'm not sure that a cover has to be the same genre as the original to be great but respect your opinion on this one. DS are not the only band to do this of course. Many prog bands took classical musical pieces and "converted" them into rock songs.

There's also Beck Bogert & Appice

rock version of the classic soul track Superstition. Phenomenal cover

Thanks for commenting Rom. Always good to hear alternative views
