While I agree on being a little pretentious and overrated, I wouldn't go as far as calling Escalator.. crap.
What I absolutely agree is with Paul Bley's recommendation Open, To Love. And if you haven't already check out his 2007 recording Solo in Mondsee which is also great.

Escalator Over the Hill is a messy, incoherent, pretentious, over-the-top, uneven, wankfest of blessedness.

One of my favorite albums of all-time.

Elston, I missed your question on 82. Escalator Over the Hill-Carla Bley & Paul Haines. EOTH is a great jazz opera. Listed in The Rough Guide - Jazz: 100 Essential CDs (1999) and winner of Jazz Album of the Year 1972 by a Melody Maker Readers Poll and French Grand Prix du Disque in 1973. It features many fine musicians including:
• Gato Barbieri - tenor saxophone
• Carla Bley - organ, celeste, chimes, calliope, piano
• Jack Bruce - bass, vocal
• Don Cherry - trumpet
• Charlie Haden - bass
• Sheila Jordan - vocal
• Ron McClure - bass
• John McLaughlin - guitar
• Paul Motian - drums, dumbec
• Linda Ronstadt - vocal

EOTH's an album that is certainly not short period of time for listening! Album dramaturge pool as the brilliant radio play.
