I actually thought the Mayhem cover was extremely interesting. Like, yeah, it's disturbing and stuff, but for a black metal band, what's more bad-ass than showing your lead singer dead?
It was also pretty risky of them 🫢
Closer is a great cover though, but I just figured it wouldn't be such a landslide.

Apparently (at least according to wikipedia), the photo was stolen and used as the album cover for a bootleg copy of the album, and was never released officially by the band. Or at least that's how I understood things. I stopped reading the article and following links because it all got too depressing... church bombings, band members murdering each other, the suicide.... 🙁 🙁 🙁

Fun fact about that Mayhem cover:
Dead's suicide note (the band's ex-singer, and the corpse pictured) read the following, and only the following:
"Sorry about the mess"
Some pretty great gallows humour right there.
Also, it looks like I'm still the only one who voted for Mayhem... oh dear...
