Nothing apart from the fact it scared the shit out of me when I first heard it. But then I do suffer from raised blood pressure and a morbid fear of telephones.

One o' mine too, for that matter (check my chart).

Now I've really started to like Doc more.... Think

So, anyway, Trout Mask is leading right now, closely followed by Safe as Milk.........and then, there are 3 albums with one vote each. Shocked Also, Don's fave "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" didn't get any votes. Shocked

Wait, does your morbid fear of telephones have anything to do with the Beefheart song "Telephone"? Wink

And Lick My Decals Off, Baby has 2 votes now Surprised Wow.

BTW, I just discovered this compilation called The Dust Blows Forward: An Anthology. Seeing the track listing, I think it might just be the best Beefheart compilation. Or maybe even overall, it might be the best Beefheart album, since it collects some of the greatest tracks from his albums.

I prefer Safe as Milk. It's enjoyable, listenable and has several stand-out tracks that work well on their own. What would people say is the stand-out track on TMR?

As far as I'm concerned, none of the tracks on TMR make any of my play-lists, whereas I could pick Electricity, Autumns Child, Zig Zag Wanderer etc from Safe as Milk and they are actually a great listen!

Among the more listenable Trout Mask Replica tracks, Veteran's Day Poppy includes a nice, uptempo blues jam, Moonlight on Vermont is somewhat (at least compared to most of its songs) conventional and structured, while When Big Joan Sets Up has some nice riffs. China Pig might be messy, but it isn't far from traditional delta blues.

SAM and TMR are both great albums, but the best Beefheart album IMO is actually Doc at the Radar Station. It has Hot Head, Ashtray Heart, Run Paint Run Run, and Making Love to a Vampire with a Monkey on My Knee. All of which I would without hesitation include in my Top 10 Beefheart Songs list. I can't imagine more than 4 tracks even from a DOUBLE album like TMR on my top 10 of Beefheart songs, which probably says much about DATRS.

IMO, here are some stand-out tracks from TMR:

The Blimp (mousetrapreplica)
My Human Gets Me Blues
Dachau Blues
Pena
Moonlight on Vermont
Hair Pie: Bake 1
Frownland
When Big Joan Sets Up
Veteran's Day Poppy
Old Fart at Play
