Not a huge fan of the production on this one (although I've probably said that before tbh), and there's certainly a big Tosh and Livingston-shaped hole. Definitely aimed at crossing over into the rock market. Still got some dope songs obviously ('Crazy Baldhead', 'Roots, Rock Reggae', the stunning 'Johnny Was'), but can't help but feel it pales in comparison to pretty much everything that came before (post-Soul Rebels anyway). It also helps that it's breezier and, overall, more carefree than the vastly overrated Exodus, but I guess with that album the rockists got what they wanted - a reggae album that followed the post-Beatles/Beach Boys "classic album" template. But yeah, this is about on par with Natty Dread, a few notches below Catch a Fire and Burnin', and a few notches above everything that followed. Still, you generally can't go that wrong with Marley. Except for Legend. Fuck Legend.
It's amazing and I prefer it to Natty Dread. Not as great as Exodus though IMO, and of course Catch and Burnin. And yeah Johnny Was might be his best track, and top 5 for all reggae. Incredible song.
