Dwarf Fortress is probably one of the most in-depth, most immerssive video games I have ever played. It looks like this:

...yeah, rendered in ASCII, although you can download skins that replace it with nicer looking graphics. I don't because I'm not a basic bitch, but you can.

It's also the hardest game I've ever played. I've been playing it on-and-off for two years now and I'm still considering myself in the "beginner" phase - every time I build a fortress everything is going good and then everybody starts dying of thirst and dysentery and I'm not sure how to build a proper working well or, like, clean the fucking place better. But fuck is it fun.

There will come a point where your meager settlement of five or so dwarves will have blossomed into a city of thousands - and every single dwarf will have its own name, backstory, memories, achievements, goals, relationships, skills, etc. - in some games the sky is the limit; in dwarf fortress limitations are not measured in the epic per se but in the infinitesimal. It is mind-boggling how far some of the micro-management goes in this game.

It's also a member of the "roguelike" genre - meaning if you fuck up in anyway, that's it. There's no going back to old saves. If your city crumbles it will remain on the map as ruins (and you'll even be able to return to it later to explore it as a dungeon). This game is epiiiiiiiiiic and you should play itttttttttttttt.

The mother of all roguelikes AND minecraft. Everyone should play this at least a couple of hours, it's as much a milestone of gaming as Half Life - only way less well known.

Ok, well, it appears that Necharsian, my fortress' jeweler has given birth to a baby boy with his loving husband, Bubba Smooth. Congrats, Necharsian. BrandonMeow and Drakonium have also had a kid apparently but apparently that was ages ago.

The unnecessarily epic two-story underground "Tomb Of Albummaster" has finally been completed, although Albummaster isn't dead yet and half the colony seems to be starving since I turned all the plump helmets (the vegetables they eat) into alcohol.

I would also like to take the time to say a prayer to those we lost to Goblins today.
