I've long been a casual fan of surrealism, but I'm always on the lookout for more films to watch that incorporate the style. Thus, I figured I'd just open up two questions to the BEA lounge: One, what are some of your favorite surreal films?

Second, what would be some good ones to show to mixed company? You know, possibility of kids or youngish people there. These films don't need to be G-rated or anything that tame, just not quite to the Jodorowsky level of graphic content.

The whole Orphic trilogy is probably quite good, though I've only ever seen Orpheus and a few scenes from The Blood of a Poet. We watched L'Étoile de mer in Hebrew school (I believe it was an uncut version, not 100%) and while everyone else was confused I was really interested. Lastly, Destino remains surprisingly poorly known, but is alright at least (not great but somewhat interesting to see how animation can be saved)

Alice by Jan Švankmajer. It's unrated and it's been sometime since I've seen it but I seem to recall some disturbing imagery that might be a little unnerving for young kids.

And surely this qualifies...

I adore this movie. A favourite of DBZ and I's. Don't recall it being surreal as much as kind of darkly whimsical...feels like the thrown away things in the corners of rooms coming to life...like some demented version of Toy Story...love it so. Anyways, this thread should come in handy since surrealism is something that appeals to me. Smile

Alice is the absolute shit. (I also highly recommend Švankmajer's Lesson Faust and any of his short films.)

Argh curse my phone and it's inability to easily link videos. I'll be back with some faves next time I have access to a computer. I'm a bit of a surrealism junkie

LOVE Alice. Can't remember who introduced it to me, but it was definitely through BEA. So thank you for that.
