You're doing a great job with UPotD, Brandon, thanks!
As for the album, I can understand why yourself finds it much harsher than Beefheart. It's not just the vocals (which are definitely more shrill), but the music and lyrics are really in-your-face. Whereas Trout Mask Replica sounds like a surrealistic playground, the raw fatalism of this album makes me feel like going and cowering in the corner.
That's the genius of it, though. It's not for all moods, but is great nonetheless.
Just listened to this album for the first time in years, I've missed you old friend. This should be on my overall chart I just need to find a place for it, only track I don't love is "Sentimental Journey". Even that track though is essential, it's integral to the whole experience and what not.
Oh and them vocals: David Thomas is a madman, see :50.

Awesome pick, Brandon!!!
David Thomas' vocals on this platter are definitely an acquired taste. Interestingly, he didn't start off singing this way!! So the TWO better gateway drugs to the wonders of Pere Ubu are actually 1) David Thomas' previous band, proto-punk legends Rocket From the Tombs...

2) the singles that preceded The Modern Dance which are collected on the Terminal Tower comp.
Thanks for the recs, I'll check those out! I already really like the album, though, I was only trying to say that the harsh vocals are part of the experience.
