  • Post subject: External Hard Drive Question?
I have a 1tb External Hard Drive that is half full and is just run on Wi Fi. However just recently I cant transfer files to or from it without the whole thing crashing. Even when I transfer a song or picture to it, it can take up 3 or 4 minutes.

Anyway I just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced the same issue and if it can be fixed with spending as little money as possible?

ive had to buy like 3 new external hard drives because they keep crashing, seemingly very temperamental things. I mean you could try, if you haven't already, taking everything off onto your computer and formatting it etc. other than that i dont know sorry.

Well thats the issue I'm having. I can't even move files off it, but I can still play movies and music that are on it fine. It's unbelievably aggrivating

Can you move data with a USB connection? Is it under warranty still? If so you can contact manufacturer's telephone support.

You could try the disk cleanup and disk defragmenter utilities in

Start > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup

Start > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter

hopefully that might help, or have you switched the drive to read-only in properties? (think you need to right-click on the hard drive symbol in My Computer to check this)

I plugged a USB into it the other day and tried to move a movie over, it didnt crash but it was going to take 80 hours.

Ill try the Disk defrag and if that fails I'll call tech support. It's such a pain in the ass, I swear these things cuase more issues than they solve.

If your data is fine but transfer is slow, it might be a cable problem. Try plugging it into different USB outlets, or try a different USB cord.

Can't help you with that one, sorry. However, to anyone having their vast music collections on an external hard drive. DO by all means back it up, either by spending a bit more money and getting a dual drive where the two mirrors each other, or by getting a second one and manually backing it up now and then. I've had one crash on me, and two friends of mine had theirs crash as well. It happens more often than people think, and when it does, it may be too late to save the hours and hours of collecting, ripping and sorting that have gone into it.

Ive got 100gb of music that im at risk of losing. for the past 12 months ive copied and pasted album covers into albums on Windows Media Player and then added the updated albums to iTunes overall its taken me about 12 months to get it the way I want it, and I'm at risk of losing it all. I'm really not happy, as you said though I could have prevented it
