Another tough matchup. Leaning towards Mascis at the moment, simply because I feel like he has a more distinctive style, and because his guitar-playing is probably the main reason I like Dinosaur, but Townes' playing represents everything I want from my country music - it's dusty, unpretentious, raw like a glass of rye.
My thinking is similar to Skinny's on this one. As much as I love Townes (and I do), I really think Mascis has the more distinctive sound. His chaotic approach to guitar is a big part of what makes Dinosaur Jr. so cool. The no-frills guitar playing in Van Zandt's music is a perfect aesthetic choice, but not the stuff to win Best Ever Guitarist tournaments.
Same as everyone I guess. I actually enjoy Van Zandt's music more than Dino's, but as far as guitar playing goes, Mascis really is among the best I've ever heard.
Dream final 4 would be Berry, Mascis, Reinhardt, and Marr (sorry Jimi but you got enough love elsewhere, that's more just to be surprising than who most deserves it).
Weird story, I didn't know Mascis was the guy in Dinosaur Jr until Fred Armison left SNL and he whipped into that incredible guitar solo. I was only familiar with his solo acoustic album, which I really liked, but the second that solo happened I went "oh hey it's Dinosaur Jr". _________________

Anyways, about my nom. J is an arrogant prick. LOL. But boy can he play guitar!!! And, really, why would I care if he's a nice guy or not. I'm not setting him up with my sister. I'm rocking out to his records. And for some reason, well-adjusted people aren't the only ones who make good music. Understatement. LOL.
