- Post subject: What your most/least favorite qualities in music listeners?
|
Because this website is full of big music fans People are going to hear more music than the person happy with 5 or albums and once a year pops in HMV for a new one. People on BEA tend to like the whole music album thing much more.
So what do you like to see most or least in a music listener? Do you want them to be like you? Do you have things which hit your light switch or leave you cold? Do you even care what others are like and live in a world of grey blobs with each the same opinion?
I think mine would be
Most favorite qualities in music listeners:
Friendly
Understanding
Having favorite artist
Think before they speak
Least favorite qualities in music listeners:
Considering themselves most important of all
Getting angry over what others say
Apathy
Close minded

Anyone willing to give anything a chance is a good listener, in my book, especially people willing to try more than once to get into an artist or genre.
Biggest pet peeve? Dismissing "pop" or "catchiness" or "popularity" as negative qualities. "They went mainstream, they sold out..." is really stupid. For me, the more people can like something, the better. _________________ Here's my 2014 chart

Least:
Narrow-minded
Ignorance
Facetiousness
Patronizing
Condescending
Basically what I dislike in people in general.
For the opposite, I like open-minded mature passionate but tolerant folks who are chill as hell.

Like:
-wide perspective (kind of open mindedness i guess but more like the difference between "i'll listen to anything" and "i'll actively get into anything." seems a lot cooler to have a chart of radically different artists rather than have an overall full of indie pop but be "willing" to listen to Wu-Tang or something)
-unique tastes in general
-able to clearly articulate positions, even in the face of opposition, with conviction (i'd rather talk to an arrogant prick with well-thought-out opinions than some flower child with nothing important to say about anything)
-punks
-rappers
-electronic fans who can't stand electropop, brostep, etc.
-people who prefer Yoko Ono to The Beatles
-jazz snobs
-music academics who don't just fill concert halls with Radiohead arrangements
-people who cry listening to The Smiths
-people who acknowledge the '80s and early '90s as the best time for underground American rock music and wish they could live in Austin during the Reagan/Bush 1 years
Dislike:
-excessively canon listeners
-excessively middle-of-the-road listeners
-people who only listen to Euro-American music
-people who dismiss pop but listen to experimental rock and think they're intellectuals for it
-fans of brostep, electropop, etc.
-fans of Vampire Weekend who have never listened to actual recordings from any part of Africa
-people who hate disco (seriously, fuck you)
-people who wish they were at Woodstock and don't shut up about it
-people who read Kurt Cobain conspiracy theory books
-people who have Bob Marley posters but don't know where Jamaica is on a map

I was almost completely the same as satiemaniac at the age of 18. Mirrors much of what I was thinking back then.

No problem satiemaniac Although it wasn't very too long ago.
These few definitely were what I would have loved:
-wide perspective (kind of open mindedness i guess but more like the difference between "i'll listen to anything" and "i'll actively get into anything." seems a lot cooler to have a chart of radically different artists rather than have an overall full of indie pop but be "willing" to listen to Wu-Tang or something)
-unique tastes in general
-able to clearly articulate positions, even in the face of opposition, with conviction (i'd rather talk to an arrogant p***k with well-thought-out opinions than some flower child with nothing important to say about anything)
-punks
-rappers
-people who prefer Yoko Ono to The Beatles
The last 3 on the dislikes as well. Those were some thoughts past me would echo well.

Likes:
- Generous listeners who are full of recommendations.
Dislikes:
- Listeners who go onto the internet and post threads on music forums about their own passive aggressive moral superiority as a music listener.
