- Post subject: Live-Action Remake Dream-Casts
|
With all this talk of anime live-action remakes lately (Akira and Cowboy Bebop being the two big ones thrown around), I thought I'd write up my dream casts for these movies were they to ever be released - even though they shouldn't under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES EVER BE RELEASED. So, imagine you had it all, BEA. The rights to a live-action re-make of an animated feature or franchise and all the resources in the world to make it, plus a time-machine. How would you do it?
AKIRA
Directed by: Guillermo Del Toro & Zach Snyder
Screenplay by: Peter Chung
Produced by: young Ridley Scott & Terry Gilliam
Music: Trent Reznor feat. Boards of Canada, produced by Brian Eno
Starring:
Tetsuo - Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood)
Kaneda - James Dean (Rebel Without A Cause)
Kei - young Jodie Foster (Taxi Driver)
Takashi - young Matthew Lewis (Harry Potter)
Kyoko - Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan)
Masaru - “Chunk” (The Goonies)
Colonel - George Takei (Star Trek)
COWBOY BEBOP
Directed by: Martin Scorsese
Screenplay by: Joss Whedon
Produced by: young George Lucas & Joss Whedon
Music: the original soundtrack, re-recorded and produced by Ennio Morricone and Danger Mouse
Starring:
Spike - Adrian Brody (The Pianist)
Jet Black - Bruce Willis (Pulp Fiction)
Faye - Christina Hendricks (Drive)
Ed - Elle Fanning? I guess? Just give her an 8-ball of cocaine (Super 8)
Vicious - Christian Bale (American Psycho)
*note: not taking race into account here. Really, Akira especially should be portrayed by a mostly Asian cast. It really wouldn't make sense otherwise, but w/e. I used my time-machine to make them all Asian somehow. Deal with it. _________________ A dick that's bigger than the sun.

Okay, not a cartoon but I've spent way too much time thinking about this:
Half Life 2 (all aged appropriately with said time machine)
Writer - Vince Gilligan
Director - Alfonso Cuaron
Soundtrack by William Bevan (Burial), Michael Sandison & Marcus Eoin (Boards of Canada)
Gordon Freeman - Gary Oldman (he's my favorite actor, a chameleon and the perfect everyman)
G Man - Stephen McHattie (the resemblance is downright terrifying)
Alyx Vance - Merle Dandridge (why improve on perfection?)
Eli Vance - Bill Cobbs
Father Gregori - Eddie Marsan
Dr Mossman - Frances McDormand
Dr Kleiner - William H Macy
Dr Breen - RFNaples
Barney - Mark Ruffalo

Scott left (thankfully); it's in film limbo now but it looks like JamFran is looking to take the project
Directed - Terrence Malick (e.g., Badlands, Days of Heaven; importantly, must use narrative silence instead of overdubbed musings, but he already owns the desert)
Screenplay - Cormac McCarthy
Music - Neil Young (e.g., Dead Man) and Warren Ellis (e.g., The Proposition, The Road, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford)
Sound - Donald O. Mitchell (e.g., Raging Bull)
Cinematography - Michael Chapman (e.g., Raging Bull, Taxi Driver)
Starring:
the kid - some unknown teenager
Judge Holden - Daniel Day Lewis (e.g., There Will Be Blood)
Toadvine - Guy Pearce (e.g., The Road, The Proposition)
John Joel Glanton - Brad Pitt (e.g., Inglourious Basterds, Fight Club, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford)
Tobin - Viggo Mortenson (e.g., The Road, LOTR, History of Violence)
Brown - Josh Brolin (e.g., No Country for Old Men, True Grit, Milk)
black Jackson - Denzel Washington (e.g., Glory, Training Day)
the idiot - Steve Buscemi

Ok, hold on, I actually didn't think too much about it first time I read this, but srsly, the fuck is up with some of the casting here? I can't even begin to wut.
And Christopher Nolan directing a high-fantasy anime-esque adventure movie?
I could see Cillian Murphy as Sephiroth, though. _________________ A dick that's bigger than the sun.

Four months later, I guess I can finally address this. Which ones did you have a problem with (other than director?)
