- Post subject: The 2012 Phenomenon and Music
|
The 2012 phenomenon and all that goes with it has had a much bigger build up in human history than the "Millennium Bug". It has also been getting hype that is not far from the amount given to the Millennium itself.
While they are in the minority, a considerable amount of artists are going believe in 2012 or have their own interpretation of them. Some artists who don't believe may get caught up in the frenzy if the media makes more films and people are more vocal about it. They might write songs about the times we live and use 2012 as a motif.
This thread is not to discuss what might, won't or will happen to Earth, society, civilization or whatever. It is to discuss how much 2012 will alter what artists write about and release in the year. Does anyone expect any "end of times" theme albums? Pop artists talking about a "spiritual awakening? Can anyone think of artists apart from Muse who are sure as hell going to get sucked into this?

i noticed a bunch of albums that had pretty stark themes possibly interpreted as "end of world" themes in 2000, not 1999, around the Y2K version of the end of the world, like "kid amnesiac" and "moon & antarctica" to name 2 that come to mind, so i'd expect 2013 to give us these type of albums, assuming there is a 2013.

I dunno if it's really gonna affect music all that much. I'd like to think people are smarter than that.
Of course, I'd also like to think that people would actually look it up and realize that the Mayan calendar DOES NOT END IN 2012. Not even close! And when it DOES end (the year 4772) it doesn't say jack shit about any apocalypse.
You think if people thought the world was ACTUALLY going to end, the would have picked up a fucking book about it just to be sure. GAWD this pisses me off to no end. _________________ A dick that's bigger than the sun.

Please don't think I believe this. Please don't think I believe this. Please don't think I believe this.
... and why should it not effect music? There are lots of people who may be interested and lots of people picking up books to be preached to about this as "yes, it is going to happen". Some characters are going to place their bets and it seems like some musicians might write about it.

Don't worry Outlaw, I assumed you didn't believe in it. I'm just ragin'.
...but you may be right, it could very well effect music. I mean, it DID effect film *cough*Roland Emmerich*cough*
It seems like, if anything, we'll see it turn up a lot in rap. Now, nothing against rap, but rappers are typically much more likely to buy into this sort of crap. I mean, if I had a nickel for every rap song that bitches about "the Illuminati"... perhaps some metal, too, as metal musicians tend to be quite fascinated with anything which encompasses mysticism, iconoclasm and esotericism, and this more or less encompasses all three...
We'll just have to see how it all plays out. I'll actually piss my pants laughing if I turn on the radio to hear Katy Perry singing about armageddon. _________________ A dick that's bigger than the sun.
