not their most acclaimed, but New Order's single 'True Faith', released on Substance, was their first to reach the hot 100 in the US and their top 40 hit

I am fairly certain there is one, although I can't think of a solid example.
The closest I get is "La Bamba" by Los Lobos. By far their most acclaimed success (really the only song of theirs that most people can name) and it was recorded for the soundtrack to the movie. Never featured on one of their numerous studio albums. Of course, it's a cover of an older song but still by far their most famous.

The only instance I can think of that comes close is the Smiths and Hatful of Hollow. How Soon Is Now? doesn't count because it was on Meat Is Murder, but other major singles like William, It Was Really Nothing. Also, Louder Than Bombs showcased Shakespeare's Sister, Shoplifters of the World Unite and Panic... So I guess, the long answer is, no.
