If you are over 40, you remember K-TEL (and to a lesser extent, Ronco). It was our generation's version of NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC (except much more creative with the titles and artwork).

I could always count on these things to be under the Christmas tree and they were a great way to own a bunch of singles instead of buying stacks of 45's or an album just for one song.

I listened to these things so much that I almost can't listen to Genesis' "No Reply at All" without expecting to hear Devo's "Working In a Coal Mine" immediately after (from K-Tel's RADIOACTIVE).

Anyway, I'd just like you to toss off any hipster hat you might be wearing and appreciate these discs for a moment. It was a wonderful way to be introduced to a lot of music you may not have been familiar with and artists you may not have heard. They really were great and cheap enough for a kid to buy. In many cases, it was often a kid's first album.

I thought it might be cool to share your favorites from that magical era of K-Tel albums being advertised on Saturday morning TV.

I don't think I had a large collection of K-Tel compilations, but I do remember one called High Energy. There were a bunch of pretty bad songs on it, but I know Blondie's "Heart of Glass" was the first track on side one, and I thought at the time, and still think, that is an absolutely great song.

This how I got ALL my records back in junior high. Turned me into the junkie I am today. My parents r so proud. lol.

Yeah, I'd see so those K-Tel commercials but they were always a bit too rich for my blood from what I remember. Besides my Dad would kick me outside as soon as he woke up so I'd only get to see the Superfriends. lol. My Dad was smart.

I never had any K-tel at the time they came out, but I found one in a used record store about 10 years ago. And from the tracks on it,I would say it was from about 1971 or so. It had a real garish cover that was like pseudo psychedelic with people dancing in "groovy" clothes and shit. and it had tracks like Venus by the Shocking Blue, Grazing in the grass by Hugh Masekela, Crystal Blue Persuasion by Tommy James and the Shondells, The Partridge Family and all kinds of crazy shit. .
