I would like to open a general discussion on Trout Mask Replica, by Captain Beefhart & His Magic Band.

It represents a pinnacle of experimental music whose equal I have never contemplated. The sheer depth of its innovation makes Genesis seem like radio-friendly pop.

I'm specifically interested in a critical discussion, or at least for somebody to explain what makes this an album worthy of a 66.9 rank score.

Hi empire22, just to respond to explain the rank score. The rank score isn't a grade to say musically how good an album is, the rank score is purely the average percentile of the chart positions in which an album has appeared and as such is not meant to be the sole indicator of an album's merits. If you look at it's average member rating, it's scored 5/5 from the two people that have rated it so far, so people on this site respect this album very much.

I have been a Captain Beefhearts fan for few years now. First album i listened was Ice Cream For Crow and i loved it. Then i moved on and listened to Safe As Milk, Strictly Personal, Doc At Radar Station, Trout Mask Replica and Lick My Decals Off, Baby!. I enjoy his complex music.
To me he stays mysterious because he doesent explane everything to the listeners. The listeners have to think themselves a bit in order to understand Don Van Vliet a bit. But finally when u get his music, u will love him. And u will enjoy all the albums!

Well I think Trout Mask Replica is the most jaw-dropping album ever made, and probably the greatest rock album of all time, its most serious contention being Rock Bottom-Robert Wyatt (1974) and Faust-Faust (1971).

I really enjoyed Safe As Milk but I've only heard little excerpts of Trout Mask Replica. What's peoples favourite Beefheart album besides these two?

Lick My Decals Off, Baby is my 2nd favourite Beefheart album, behind Trout Mask Replica and in front of Safe as Milk. Lick My Decals is similar to Trout Mask as it is an avant-guarde album, however Decals has much slicker production and as such may be a better starting point for the Avant-Beefheart.

Are you sure it's out of print? I almost bought it on vinyl (reissue on 180 gram) just a few months ago. I'm not sure about on CD though.
