  • Post subject: Black History Month Listening Project (Second Annual)
  • Quote
I did this last year for the ten days remaining in February after I thought of it. It was fun, so this time I'm doing it for the whole month. If you want to join me in either type of participation to celebrate black music for Black History Month, welcome! ๐Ÿ˜

Would love to hear about your discoveries and recommendations in this thread!

Participation Type 1: People who want to consciously listen to more music by black artists in honor of Black History Month.

I'll also toss something your way!

Dimanche ร€ Bamako by Amadou & Mariam

They're a Malian husband and wife duo who both lost their vision in their youth. It's a really neat mix of blues and traditional African music. Best of luck with your month and I can't wait to read about what you discover!

I have this album, and it's really good. I think it was in the first version of my top 100.

It's not just recs for me, but rather for anyone who's interested in being a part of this thread. So maybe someone who hasn't heard Dimanche ร€ Bamako yet will enjoy it too! ๐Ÿ˜

And I forgot to add this one that my 19yo son just turned me on to... magnificent disc!

I like it even better than her more famous Journey in Satchidananda

I second your adjective, but I slightly prefer Journey In Satchidananda. Thanks for reminding me to listen to some more Alice Coltrane. I want to try Universal Consciousness and World Galaxy, two of her other jazz albums that are supposed to be excellent.

I'll but those two into my queue as well. I'm really enjoying exploring her catalog.

Shameless plug https://www.besteveralbums.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=20962

I have nowhere the amount of time needed to go in depth on each year as I was wanting to do for this project, so for now this diary will be on hiatus; however, I think the dream is to someday create a book that accurately depicts the evolution of rock music (I'm sure there are some good one's out there, but what do they know?). For now, if you want to listen to black music, then I couldn't suggest a better starting point.

There are some country guys in the playlists as well, but don't mind them. Especially Bob Wills and his singer Tommy Duncan. They were OG's.

Universal Consciousness by Alice Coltrane

Ok I got around to this and it's an apt title for sure. Feels mind-expanding in the best possible way. Everyone plays so well and so creatively! It is already my favorite free jazz record I've heard, and will be a serious contender for my favorite Alice Coltrane record. 4.5/5.
