The difference is Greta has no personality. Their personality is just...Zeppelin. Hard to care about a band with no personality or originality.

No doubt Bjรถrk is influential, but I would struggle to name one Bjรถrk copycat artist. Can anyone else?

Led Zeppelin were great musicians but idk about great songs. A handful, at best. I have no interest in an inferior facsimile.

On BEA GVF's latest album is 190th best for the year and has a 65/100. On RYM it's 32nd worst for the year and has a 1.88/5. Just 7 out of 60 voters on BEA gave it a rating worse than its RYM average! I think that's pretty instructive as to differences in tastes between the sites.

The thing is there have been a ton of Zeppelin/Rush/Floyd copycat bands from the 80s onward, why did Greta Van Fleet become t he favorite new critical punching bag? Why did Pitchfork even bother to review it, cuz I'm guessing that's where it all started...

because the last thing rock needs in an age where many complain "rock music is dying (or is dead)" is a cover band ripping off legends of the 70's (to the point where if I hadn't heard of GVF before you might be able to fool me into believing its an actual Zeppelin song) becoming a face of the genre today. greta gets the most hate because people are going as far as to call them "saviors", and they are already winning grammy's. if this is what even longtime fans of the genre want...maybe rock should die for a while. theres nothing more to offer the public when the public just isn't interested anymore.

I think it's two things. First, there havent been any Zep copycats get big in a long time. In the 80s, they were everywhere, but since then, not so much. So this actually feels like a unique phenomenon at this point.

Second, and even more telling I think, is that other copycats channeled Zep's sound/style, but still were a bit themselves. GVF isn't just following in Zep's footsteps, their trying to be Zep with nothing else interjected whatsoever. Have you ever seen GVF? They copy everything right down to the lead singer mimicking Robert Plant's mannerisms.... like to the point of being a better imitation than Denzel Washington channeling Malcom X. They should just be a tribute band, but they're not.

Rock never died. It just lost its cultural hegemony within western popular music, which forced rock fans to actually dig a little to get to the good stuff. Most of the griping is coming from those who don't know how to dig and/or those who feel it was entitled to that position atop the heap.

Oh I agree with you, I have had no trouble finding great rock music this century, and I'm sure most here haven't either, because we know how to find it.
