Technology is changing the way I listen to music. I absolutely love playing my library on itunes in random play. I've got about 600 albums, and about 300 of them I found out through besteveralbum. It would take one month of constant listening to hear all the songs. Its a great way to keep all your albums on the play list, and I'm getting great at understanding artist strenghts because its always in immediate contrast to another artics.

The drawback is that you don't get familiar with albums as a whole, which seems to be what this site is all about. I always thought Pearl Jam was one of my favorites, but in random play a lot of their songs don't hold up as well other artists. the Black Crowes or Counting Crowes on the other hand hold up extremely well. Pavement does well also.

I know I want to add a Black Crowes albume to my greatest, but no album really stands above the others to me.

However with constant liistening of about 3 years with my ever growing library I should be able to add some albums to my chart.

Putting songs on random for 2 years prior helped me to create my first chart. I knew what I really liked back then.

But now I know so much more music something like 40-50% of the songs I listen to on random aren't on an album on my chart.

Depending on who you ask people will say the single is dead (because the charts have gone stale with songs recorded 15 years ago) or the album is dead (for the reasons you gave) but I would say both have life in them. Although with what you're saying, will more people listen to music like this in the future? Is there a way around this or are the mainstream and so called "indie" going to crush even more life from music?

One solution: people need to make really good songs like they have always done. Perhaps take it up a notch and make them more frequently than ever.

Ya.

I like that idea.

I listen to albums unless I'm doing a cardio workout or partying in which case I make a playlist

I would never shuffle songs through my entire library because I'll be in a great mood and then Frankie Teardrop will come on, or I'll be in a chill mood and Six Pack will come on, etc

I have three playlists on my ipod:

1. 'family' which is full of crap that my family likes and that we listen to in the car or if we are doing stuff in the house.

2. 'Happy place' with all my favourite songs on it - I listen to that when I need cheering up (more often than not).

3. 'train goes in 5 minutes so shake your arse' - self explanatory. I also use it when I am working out.
I actually also like 'Nevermind' as a workout album - usually gets me fired up ๐Ÿคฃ

Otherwise it is albums all the way.

Random on your entire library is just wrong - I might get the Wiggles or Miley Cyrus and my day would be ruined!

When I'm at home, I listen to albums start to finish. If I'm out walking around or on public transportation I pick an artist and listen to their songs on shuffle, then cycle through artists as my mood desires. I only put my Ipod on "Shuffle All Songs" when I'm writing; you never know what's going to pop up and give you a sudden burst of inspiration.

Playing a whole genre is the closest I come to all music on random. I'm usually in the mood for a certain kind of music.

My favorite ways of listening to music

01. Album in order (since I joined BEA, I have rededicated myself to the album ๐Ÿ˜„ )
02. Artist on random (a artist set with only their best albums and best ofโ€™s is hard to beat)
03. Genre on random (variety is good)
