I have to admit, as a person who’s not really into hiphop, Skinny’s choices mostly are the best picks in the genre. And again this one wins.

'Platinum' is such a great, triumphant rap song. The beat is glistening, slightly stilted pop-funk that sits halfway between Quik and The Neptunes, so effortlessly melodic and bouncy that it feels like a hit immediately, but the star of the show is Z-Ro, and his bluesy sing-rapping, melding the righteous energy of Tupac with something close to Bobby Bland or Donny Hathaway, talking about the only truth he knows, going to jail because the financial payout of dealing is greater than that of rapping, and subsequently getting out of jail and finally making it. When he says he "never took pride in slangin' cocaine", you believe it. When he says that he was "ready to give up, run up in a bank and say, 'This is a stick-up!'", you believe it. And when he says he's "going platinum this time", you believe that too. His city held it down, quoting Tom Tom Club at him, keeping his locker full of fanmail. That this song isn't one of the best known of the decade is more criminal than his past.

That said, I fucking love that Fatima Yamaha song - reminds me of 5am ketamine dances in East London kitchens, and it's aged really well, what with its strange mix of deep house, '80s synthpop, and quasi-g-funk earworm, masterfully building layers up and peeling them away throughout. I'd vote for it against pretty much anything in this tournament.

Both are radiant songs that sound exactly like the year they came out and yet simultaneously timeless. Vote to my own nomination - just - in the toughest match of this first round.

One of the toughest for me too. Don't have a clue which way to go... they're both great, but way too different to make it easy to compare.

Like, I'm not even leaning in any direction.

Went with Fatima because it hits a much more current nerve in terms of what I'm listening to, but tough competition and great matchup regardless, wouldn't mind seeing either get through to the next round.

Yo, I don't care who wins, either of these might be my favourite song of the tourney (depending on mood). Just vote yo.
