To me, this is where it started to go wrong for The National. I wonder if they'll ever approach the heights of their golden decade (2004-13) again.

That said, I still enjoy both this album and their latest.

i really love to listen to "high violet" and "trouble will find me".
Also, i find boxer really interesting and a pleasure to listen to.
it seems, after i listen to these albums , i never have the feeling like i wasted my time.

Truthfully when i was starting to listen to this particular album i found it lacking in performance.
i was expecting greatness along the same "sound" as the mentioned albums above.
also, my expectations were higher since it was the grammy winner for best alternative album.
I wasn't addicted to the album. I found it had some really good songs but alot of the songs didnt hit the mark.
that was then (approximately 2 yrs ago).

Fast forward to today:
i listened to this album about 3 weeks ago (4x)- i have to admit, it sounded phenomenal
the band changed their sound and they sound fresh. There was nothing wrong with the album- it was me who wasn't ready.
the pace of the music on this album is good, the songwriting is always great.
there are 3 songs that are absolutely fantastic "nobody else will be there" & "carin at the liquor store" & "empire Line"
in summary, The National are masters of growing old gracefully, getting better with age.

I think this album is excellent and it is really not where it started to go wrong with The National. Trouble Will Find Me, while a very good album on its own, really sounded like High Violet pt. 2, so a change in sound was necessary and welcome.
On this album the band employed some electronic textures and a slightly darker overall sound. I found the guitar work to be phenomenal, at times sounding like something you would find in a Radiohead album. The only downside of the album is that it's slightly overlong and drags a bit in the middle section, but man those first for songs and a couple of those at the end are among their best ever songs. I hoped this would be a transitional album and that the next one would explore these kinds of sounds even more, but I feel like they regressed with I Am Easy To Find. It is a fine album, but it's even longer and has less stand out songs. So that's where it went wrong, but hopefully it's just a temporary decline.
