Ncikelback is an OK band, an OK one. There are a couple songs I like but they aren't that good otherwise. But I'll never put them and many other famous 2000's "cool kid" rock bands in the same "league" as BOTDF.

Photograph is kind of corny but I think it's a good song.

These Songs Hate You by The Crytearions

I wouldn't say everyone hates this except me, just I'm not sure anyone else actually listened to it, even within Ireland, some lad in the west of Ireland made this really fucking good lo-fi garage punk stuff at his home and I got absolutely obsessed with it, like for months I just listened to this non-stop, the guy has like no following on YouTube or Bandcamp, the albums were free to download and this particular one has since been taken down and I can't find the complete thing online currently (though I'm convinced I've got it on a drive somewhere back in Ireland), no one within the Irish scene seems to know a thing about this guy either, I ask around but nada, it's mildly infuriating, cause it's really really good and might be best Irish album of the decade in my opinion.

A lot of the stuff I like that was deemed "uncool" or cheesy or inauthentic (or whatever) when I was growing up has since become highly respected and respectable - the likes of Sade, Luther Vandross, stuff with either a new jack swing or disco sound, a lot of that 'New Pop'/sophisti-pop stuff from the early 1980s. It seems that smooth and polished sounds from that era have become de rigueur, due to their co-opting by the likes of Destroyer, The xx, Tame Impala, Drake, and lots of others, artists deemed cool who have been vocal in their acknowledgement of those artists' influence on their own music. Those supposedly "uncool" artists or sounds I listed above were always spoken of highly by generation after generation of black artists, but sometime around the turn of the last decade they started to become venerated by white (often indie, or indie-leaning) artists and publications, giving them a wider respectability that had previously been denied them by a rockist hegemony whose emphasis on 'authenticity' often doubled as thinly-veiled racism. Suddenly somebody like Sade is regarded, rightly, as a massively distinctive and influential artist whose own genre-bending stylings were ahead of their time, as opposed to "inoffensive wine bar muzak for yuppies".

However, the thread title uses language which suggests there are famous artists out there who lack both critical and popular acclaim, when there really aren't any. Whilst Nickelback are perceived by large swathes of people as some sort of joke act - lowest common denominator rock for people who don't really like music - their huge album sales and sell-out tours suggest there are millions of people who don't hate them at all. As Patman alluded to, you kind of have to find an obscure artist in order to even try to match the criteria, and even then the idea that they're "hated" - rather than just unknown - is wide of the mark.

...

You just find a band that gets a lot of hate these days and say that you don't feel the same way, i.e. "Everybody hates Nickelback but I don't."

I didn't think that on BEA, thread titles were treated like frogs in biology class. When does the Christopher Nolan twist come in?

Everybody hates R. Kelly but I don't. (Am I doing it right?)

Seriously, though, maybe a list of these supposed artists who get a lot of hate for purely musical reasons might be helpful. I'm struggling to think of many. A few rappers, maybe (Hopsin; Logic; Machine Gun Kelly), and the odd rock band (Imagine Dragons; Five Finger Death Punch; Creed), but all of these artists are also wildly popular with just as many vocal supporters as detractors.

To use a specific example, many rappers who initially got shit for dumbing hip-hop down by self-proclaimed "real hip-hop" gatekeepers (Gucci Mane; Soulja Boy; Chief Keef; Playboi Carti; etc.) have since been critically reappraised in certain sections of pop culture media - again, rightfully - for pushing the genre forward in new and interesting directions.

What I'm trying to say is that "hate" isn't this static thing, that some artists receive and others don't. By definition, the most well-known artists are generally those who will be loved by the most amount of people, whilst also being hated by the most amount of people. Some artists have lots of online haters, but receive huge critical acclaim; others sell out massive stadiums and move millions in units, but can't seem to buy a decent review. I'm not coldly picking apart your thread title in the name of pedantry, but rather pointing out the inherent issues with the thread concept itself.

I don't get it. Probably too manly for me.

That's for you to wrestle with alone.
