Taking into consideration Mind Movie's thread on fucked up, yet great albums; what albums have you fought to like or to appreciate? Foetus' Nail was one I didn't really "get" and only recently realised that it is a major influence on many underground and industrial Australian music.

However, the album that is a challenge and one that I really have tried to like or appreciate is Merriweather Post Pavilion. I just can't listen to it. About 6 times I have sat down and put it on, wanting to get through it but I just can't. Something about it makes me just want to avoid music for a good few hours afterwards.

So back to the idea: what album have you fought to like or to appreciate?

I read your first paragraph and immediately thought of Merriweather Post Pavillion. Then I read yourt second paragraph. Spot on!

I tried to like Loveless, Is This It, Closer, Daydream Nation, and Exile On Main St. Smile

Now 2 of them are in my top 10, on is in my 50-100 range, and 2 of the others ones still suck Very Happy

Merriweather Post Pavilion and OK Computer are the two that come to mind. Have listened to both numerous times but still find them less than enjoyable.

I've fought to like the following albums from our top 100. Some of them contain songs that I enjoy. That doesn't change the fact that as albums, they bore me.
I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. They are:

Radiohead "Ok Computer"
Neutral Milk Hotel "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea"
Interpol "Turn On The Bright Lights"
The Stone Roses "The Stone Roses"
Jeff Buckley "Grace"
Sonic Youth "Daydream Nation"
U2 "Achtung Baby"
Oasis "Definitely Maybe"
Arctic Monkeys "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not"
Wilco "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"

I frequently re-listen to Britpop (Stone Roses, Blur, Oasis) to try to see why it's critically acclaimed; same with R.E.M. These are just such bland bands to me.

YES! Someone agrees with me Very Happy

I find REM dull as crap d'oh! , I've heard 7 of their albums, hoping to find something, and none of them got above a 60/100 rating Neutral . Just really boring.

Also, I forgot to mention Turn On The Bright Lights. That's another I don't understand. It sounds like a Ian Curtis imitator with flat background noises. Confused
