Of the All-time Top 500 or Top 300 album lists that music publications (RS, NME, Paste, etc) have put out in recent years, this one might be my favorite. While it's far from perfect, and has some quite embarrassing entries, I love how unique and unpredictable it is compared to the other big magazine lists. First off, I was very happy to see it include some of my personal faves that don't usually show up on these things, like:

215. Laura Nyro - New York Tendaberry (1969)
260. Cat Power - The Greatest (2006)
321. Super Furry Animals - Radiator (1997)
335. Mary Margaret O'Hara - Miss America (1988)
376. Jellyfish - Bellybutton (1990)
377. Julian Cope - Peggy Suicide (1991)
437. Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain (2000)
491. Sturgill Simpson - Metamodern Sounds In Country Music (2014)
492. Cardiacs - Sing To God (1996)

And UNCUT's list inspired me to re-listen to the following entries with fresh ears, and now I love them more than I used to:

152. Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator) (2001)
176. Broadcast - Tender Buttons (2005)
186. Happy Mondays - Bummed (1988)
247. Saint Etienne - Foxbase Alpha (1991)
276. Super Furry Animals - MWNY (2000)
364. Jessica Pratt - On Your Own Love Again (2015)
398. Bill Callahan - Apocalypse (2011)
425. Leonard Cohen - Old Ideas (2012)

And it was great to see not 1, not 2, but 6(!) Nick Cave entries:

112. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Ghosteen (2019)
115. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Push The Sky Away (2013)
227. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Skeleton Tree (2015)
322. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds The Boatman's Call (1997)
444. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Let Love In (1994)
476. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Abbattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus (2004)

Notice how odd it is to see Cave's three 2010's albums ranked higher than all his previous classics? This brings me to another weird thing about this list - it has lots of recent albums by very old guys, like...

68. Bob Dylan - Rough And Roudy Ways (2020)
171. Bob Dylan - Modern Times (2006)
327. Bob Dylan - Tempest (2012)

Yeah, those are all good albums. But Top 500 of all time? With his most recent one at #68?!? Above the, by all accounts, far superior
258. Bob Dylan - Time Out Of Mind (1997)
and
324. Bob Dylan - John Wesley Harding (1967)

Then there's this bizarre occurrence:

328. Brian Eno - The Ship (2016)
341. Brian Eno - Another Green World (1975)
343. Brian Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets (1974)

The Ship? Really? OK, it got me to listen to it again. And it's quite good. Not bad at all. But ranked higher than the masterpieces AGW and HCTWJ? Sacrilege!

And I did a double take when I saw this:

439. The Breeders - All Nerve (2018)
452. The Breeders - Last Splash (1993)

Wha? I forgot the Breeders even got back together. I don't remember even hearing about this 2018 album when it came out. And now it's better than Last Splash??? Uh, ok, you have me curious enough to check it out.

Worst of all is this abominable injustice:

122. Taylor Swift - 1989 (2014)
411. Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon (1983)

Even if you like TSwift (and I don't), nearly 300 spots higher than the GOAT of GOAT albums? IMO any list of all-time top albums should have DSOTM at least in its Top 20. Having it way down at #411 has got to be a typo.

Those quibbles aside, I mostly liked and appreciated the UNCUT Top 500. As DD noted, it's definitely better than RS.

A quirky, diverse list of albums. It's pretty decent

Complaints? No Led Zep in the top 200 and no progressive rock whatsoever. Nothing by the likes of Genesis, Yes, Camel, King Crimson etc. Also no.jazz fusion other than one or two by Miles
So there seems to be a few holes in their listening coverage but nevertheless it's a fun list and better than Rolling Stones for sure.

A single album from the 2020s in a list of 500 and its by Bob Dylan? lol.

I know I'm not the target audience for this, but this list is some garbage.

Imo, once you get past the top 100 which have a lot of the obvious choices, it gets more interesting and eccentric. Though I'm joyfully surprised to see
the cult-classic Marquee Moon at #5,
Blonde On Blonde being higher than Highway 61,
Scott Walker's Scott 4 at #52,
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere being the higher NY album instead of After The Gold Rush or Harvest,
and the almost forgotten Flying Burrito Brother's Gilded Palace of Sin at #88.

The best moments here, of albums simply being included, being:

106. Primal Scream - XTRMNTR (heard this album three times this month, cool album)
109. Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out (give these people their flowers, and this is a fantastic mellow dream pop record)
116. Michael Jackson - Thriller (highly disagree, objectively this should be in the top 3, but I admire their boldness for having it outside the top 100)
123. The Byrds - Notorious Byrd Brothers (favorite 60s band album for me, perhaps my top "happy" album too. The Byrds rock)
132. Fleet Foxes - s/t (favorite band album PERIOD!)
137. Blur - Parklife (wanna the best written rock albums, so diverse, melodic to the core, borderline genius satire. If it was my list, I'd place it higher than the Pulps and Suedes)
154. The Cure - The Head On The Door (exceptional new wave)
164. The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday (Uncut making sure that the Byrds is not underrepresented, and with their good material too)
170. Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom (hello AfterHours and Scaruffi)
177. Beyonce - Lemonade (I believe RS ranked this at #32 when their list came out in 2020, only four years after its release. I remade their list in 2021, where I placed it (I think) around 200-209. Uncut probably saw mine and added the points of Rolling Stone to get #177. In retrospect, it's a bit high, but if you're gonna pick Beyonce, it should be this)
183. Lambchop - Nixon (I haven't even heard this one, hope it can rival How I Quit Smoking)
213. Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks (punk!)
217. Boards of Canada - Geogaddi (great surreal Lynch-ian music. This album looks in place and out of place at the same time)
224. Mazzy Star - She Hangs Brightly (you don't really go wrong with Hope Sandoval and co's Paisley Underground-filled debut with a variety of sounds).
239. Frank Ocean - channel ORANGE (listened to this album today for the 57th time, I can sing this album front to back and it inspired a single of mine on my next album, need I say more).
240. Tom Waits - Rain Dogs (I know it's a must to have the big guy here, but Idk maybe I've just been in a sacred Tom Waits phase the past year?)
254. Eminem - MMLP (and the fact they put it right above MBDTF is amusing)
278. Solange - A Seat At The Table (out of many acclaimed political albums released during the 2010s, this is one of those I enjoy the most. Solange is a treasure to me)
290. MC5 - Kick Out The Jams (should be higher though, it was the first full punk rock experience, 7 years before the movement)
293. Orange Juice - You Cannot Hide Your Love Forever (this is what The Smiths sound like to people who like The Smiths, and I hate The Smiths (mostly). Take that how you will)
303. Bark - Psychosis (delicious progressive rock with elements of true beauty. I think this is only the second all-time list I've seen this in)
304. Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender (its beauty is drenched in childlike wonders, and the harp-playing is next level yet accessible. Joanna forever)
329. Neutral Milk Hotel - ITAOTS (when you were young you were the king of carrot flowers....)
331. Scott Walker - Tilt (based. there's also a chance I am heading towards a Scott Walker phase, he is what I wish more older musicians should be. This record is freaking awwweesome)
335. Mary Margaret O'Hara - Miss America (almost a hidden gem from the late 80s, good songwriting)
339. Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One (top tier indie rock for me, even though it's almost obligatory to have this one in the top 500 too)
349. Purple Mountains - s/t (RIP David Berman)
353. Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See (maybe the biggest inspiration of an album, other than Souvlaki by Slowdive, for my upcoming album, and a dream pop classic)
360. Lorde - Melodrama ( Embarassed is there anyone on this site who've listened to this record more than me?)
362. The Kinks - Something Else (just like the Byrds, the Kinks are super important, and this is my personal favorite of theirs)
363. The Avalanches - Since I Left You (RS left this one off their list? A happy, unique, impressive, groovy, summery album that, outside of one person, I don't know a soul who dislikes? I'm a depressed motherfucker and this record could make my cheeks hurt from smiling and my arms n legs hurt from dancing)
374. Tim Buckley - Happy Sad (as BorderFreeAndrew once said, an unsung hero. I wrote a description of this album on my chart at around #22 of all time. I metaphysically love this album)
375. Blur - 13 (technically my favorite experimental rock album, always something to follow musically in this one)
386. Husker Du - Zen Arcade (technically my favorite punk album, always something to rock me)
435. The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms (as time goes on, it's like these guys get more and more forgotten, but as time goes on, the better this record sounds to me compared to later try-hard post-punk)
436. Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight (pretty much a perfectly written pop rock album, the sound of God laughing at himself, the ultimate clash of psychedelic arrangements and British punk attitude. Oh and it's catchy as fuck)
458. Scott Walker - The Drift (read #331)
463. David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name (Crosby was awesome, and people sometimes forget how influential he was, just like people can forget this album rivals the hyped meditative psychedelic folk long-plays of this era)
465. GZA - Liquid Swords (an album smarter than I ever could be)
492. Cardiacs - Sing To God (someone said that this is too punk for rock and too rock for punk.)

Eh, I don't like any for-profit publications of greatest albums lists. Uncut hasn't changed that.

Thanks for sharing DD Smile

I’m not a fan of this list. Even by canonical rock lists standards it lacks diversity. They miss out a lot of established classics just within rock- no Metallica, U2, or Sabbath. As perviously mentioned, there’s no prog (unless you count Wyatt). There’s no metal I can see unless you count Sisters of Mercy. There’s way too much of what they do like, particularly later Dylan.

Yeah there are some nice choices as well. Some that have already been pointed out, but I don’t this makes much of a statement beyond saying that they think the Beatles, Dylan, and Bowie got it right and they don't really like too much deviation from these guys. Then later REM, Radiohead, and Blur (but oh no, not U2!)

I’d say “rough and rowdy ways” and “Think Tank” are among the most dubious inclusions.

There's actually a reason (not a good one, but a reason) for the bizarre make-up of this list - it's based on a series of 500-best-of-the-decade lists the magazine had done over the previous year and a half, from the Sixties through "the 2010s to now." To compile the all-time top 500, they simply mix-and-matched all of the other lists, adhering as closely to the original rankings as possible and aiming for a balance between the decades. Hence, for example, Rough and Rowdy Ways being ranked so high, because it was #3 on the 2010-now list.
