No, I don't like Katy Perry. But I'm incredibly impressed by whoever produces her, like her marketing person. Whoever it is. And her song writers.

She first released "California Gurls" in May of 2010. This song was immensely popular for a while. Then, the song "Teenage Dream" came out (which wasn't half bad, actually). Then another song. Then another. They were all spaced so as one died out of popularity, another picked up its slack. Until finally, we had "The One That Got Away." That fervor lasted for however long, and then died down.

I thought we'd finally escaped the (literally) non-stop barrage of Katy Perry singles. Nope.

She's now released another one. And it's number 1 on itunes (even higher than Whitney Houston, which is only 69 cents).

Although her music is driving me insane (I don't even listen to the radio, but I still hear it everywhere), I'm extremely impressed by whoever is in charge of this whole scheme. People don't even realize it's happening, but, for now at least, Katy Perry is always big.

I know she definitely wrote her own songs when she first broke into the mainstream. Not sure about these days but I think she still does.

I remember seeing this video (and a couple others from the same set) when she was just starting to gain popularity, and I was blown away at how talented and great she was with just her voice and an acoustic guitar. Kind of a shame that she just became another candy coated pop princess that a lot of people think has no talent at all. Cause watching this video, you can tell she's actually a hell of a musician.

Just look up any of the songs she's written, and you'll find a credits list of songwriters long enough to form its own small nation.

Then, look up a song by... oh, I dunno... let's go with Joanna Newsom. I've got the vinyl right here, and her name is the only one listed for song writing credits.

It's kinda sad that Katy Perry needs a whole fucking battalion to write one generic piece of simple, catchy pop music, while Joanna Newsom can write a seventeen minute sprawling and complex epic like "Only Skin" all on her own.

Well first off, looking at her first album "One Of The Boys", the best songs on that album were written either by just her, or her and one or two other people. But second, and more importantly, when did I ever try and compare her to Joanna Newsom or any number of other female musicians that are immensely talented/more talented than her? All I was saying is she's not one of those female pop stars with nothing but good looks and little to no musical talent that is a total creation of a record company. She can at least stand alone as a musician.

Oh, no, I wasn't like attacking you or anything, or claiming you were somehow claiming that Katy Perry was superior to Joanna Newsom, I was just making a comparison.

She's really not that talented. You could pick any of the millions of hard-working musicians and they would be far better, and most would have a couple good songs written too.
The only songs worth hearing from Katy Perry are her hits. And even then, only about one in four of them.

People have misunderstood my point. I'm not saying she's this immensely talented musician that deserves the amount of fame she's recieved due to her musical ability alone. All I'm saying is that when you compare her to other similar female pop artists like Britney Spears, Kesha, etc, I would think shes the only one that can sound that good just standing on stage with her guitar. That shows she has at least a little musical merit. And I know there are countless hardworking talented musicians out there, but you can at least admit she can write a catchy song. And I know that isn't the hardest song to play on the guitar, but she plays it very clean and with feeling.
