What are the most wildly inconsistent albums you've ever heard? And I don't mean a few really good songs and a few pretty bad ones. I mean albums that in your opinion have all time great songs, as well as pathetic/horrible/boring as shit songs. Obviously, since it's taken to extremes, there aren't really many albums that fall into this "wildly inconsistent" category.

For me personally the best example is Kid A. Everything In It's Right Place is one of my absolute favorite songs of all time. I also think Optimistic and Idioteque are incredible songs. On the other hand, I think Treefingers is rather terrible and bores the hell out of me, and Kid A is annoying and terrible too. For most of the other songs I don't feel very strong one way or another.

Another good one is Angles by The Strokes. Machu Picchu, Two Kinds Of Happiness, and Taken For A Fool are blissfully awesome songs. Conversely, You're So Right and Games are atrocious, almost completely unlistenable songs. I like basically every other songs quite a bit, but those two bring the album way down for me.

The only other album that I've heard that comes close to this level is Light Grenades by Incubus, but nothing is quite good enough for me to consider all time great.

So what about the rest of you? What albums can you think of with both all time great songs and all time bad ones (more than one of each, making the entire listen inconsistent).

I liked Machu Picchu much more than anything else on the album.

Inconsistent albums? ๐Ÿค” If I listen to an album for long enough I usually like all the songs. It would have to be something that wasn't a favorite where I liked the singles

Agreed.

Some of the band's best songs, like Happiness is a Warm Gun, Revolution 9, Helter Skelter among others. But there's also a bunch of garbage.

I somewhat agree. I think if they had removed all of the filler (interludes, skits, etc.) the album would be much more enjoyable for me as a whole. I mean, they're funny and all, but not worth repeat-listening. Hurray for being able to cut tracks short on iTunes :P. But I don't really dislike any of the songs on that album, though I should probably listen to it again.

I'll have to double check my album ratings and see if I can think of any... but not right now.

This is another one of those ones where no one is going to agree (i think both Kid A and The White Album are 100%ers).

But I would put forward:

Moby's Play
Metallica's self titled
Gorillaz' self titled

aaaaand pretty much anything by The Smiths.

EDIT: I forgot the album that literally owns this thread title: Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness

Treefingers and Kid A are awful? Really? If I was given a time machine back to 1999 I would go and meet Thom to tell him not to include Optimistic, In Limbo and Morning Bell. Aside from that, I think the album is great. But really great. Thatยดs why I'm surprised you don't like the track Kid A.

I just listened to this again earlier today, and I can't disagree more.

The ArchAndroid by Janelle Monae
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd
Let it Bleed by The Rolling Stones
Dirty by Sonic Youth
Fear of Music by Talking Heads

Those are the ones to come to mind without using too much brain power.
