Recently I discovered the solo work of Scott Walker. He is indeed the voice of the commercial acclaimed Walker Brothers. His recent solo albums shows such an unusual and even haunting approach that it might even scare the listener. He's a big influence to artists like Jarvis Cocker, Steven Wilson and even Opeth.
Have you ever come across a piece of music that gives you more or less the creeps?
The first time I listened to Suicide's Frankie Teardrop was in a completely dark room through headphones, without knowing anything on beforehand. I nearly died 😲
Also, I once attended to a Swans concert which was pretty unsettling. Same thing can be said about their album Soundtracks for the Blind.
A lot of Thirlwell's pieces (instrumental and as Foetus) are haunting, creepy and hideously dark. I chose this as an example of his lyrics painting a picture of delusions of grandeur and allusions to Charles Manson.
Music Has the Right to Children has always freaked me out. Replica by Oneohtrix Point Never is another more recent album that always gives me the freaks when I listen to it. I completely agree about The Drift. It's creepiness is part of what makes me rate it as my #2 best album of the 2000's.
