1959 is often regarded as milestone year in jazz, in which conventions were stretched and four timeless albums released. From young upstarts to veterans of the scene, artists released some of the most intruiging, beloved jazz music of all-time.

The question is simple: which do you think is best?

Which album? He only released live albums in '59, and Africaine may have been recorded in '59 but wasn't released until years later.

EDIT: Shit, sorry. Forgot about Moanin'. Which does deserve its' place in the poll in fairness. Embarassed

Ornette, then Mingus, then Miles, then Brubeck. First two are masterpieces, I tend to like Kind of Blue a little less than I used to - but I'll certainly give it a re-listen to freshen things up, I'm not the greatest fan of Brubeck.

It's kind of funny (not kind of blue Cool)! I decided today to listen to some 50's albums, because I've only listened to a very small amount of albums from that decade. Two of the albums I listened to today for the first time ever in my life were "Time Out" and "Mingus Ah Um"! I think I liked "Time Out" best.

I went with Kind Of Blue, even though ironically, it's the only one currently not on my main chart.

THE SHAPE OF JAZZ TO COME. Essential album.

The others are good, but their respective artists have released better records. I know at least 3 Mingus albums I prefer. Same for Miles Davis.

Wow! I had no idea those all came out the same year. Shocked I'll confess and say I haven't given Coleman's intro to free jazz many spins, but I love the melodies of Ah Um, and when it comes to jazz albums, I go back to that one the most (other than Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain, which I usually put on for study or background music).

Kind of Blue and Mingus Ah Um are great, and Time Out is good, but I think the best by far was The Shape of Jazz to Come.
