- Post subject: Some Nights - Ripped apart by reviewers!?
|
Listened to an album called 'Some Nights' by fun. today. It is their new album released this year and seen as I have the previous one and immensely enjoyed it I thought I would give this a go. Couldn't go wrong with it either. Great stuff indeed! Also first time I had listened to their surprise number 1 'We Are Young' and rather interestingly found it wasn't the best thing on here. As good as it was, I was expecting something which would blow everything out the water. Really, I was shocked to see fun. at the top of the chart earlier this year!
Anyway, back onto the subject at hand. I listened to the album and found something I liked as much as their debut. As I do these days I will rate something here and then hop over to my 'rate your music' account and rate it there. Sometimes I have an idea in my head of what the rate your music score will be before going to the page. Usually make broad guesses like "between 3.0 and 3.5" or "perhaps 3.6... round about" and then see how far off I was. Most times I get it wrong but the score seems to make sense. Not today however. I went onto the website thinking 'Some Nights' would be about 3.6 or maybe bordering on the 3.7 range. Reaching the page, I was absolutely stunned to find it was a whole 1.0 lower. That is pretty huge gap in scores on 'Rate Your Music' if you are not in the know. Album score was 2.74! How!?
So why did 'Some Nights' get rated so low? I genuinely did not expect it to get such a band reception. I scroll down to read what users had wrote about the album and they are ripping the thing to pieces! It went deeper than CBP (Coldplay Bashing Phenomenon) and it seemed a few had a level of hatred for the album like it had personally wronged them! They weren't being funny, this was hatred! 😲
Further still, I noticed a trend appearing within the reviews. This trend wasn't entirely aimed at the album but at the act 'fun.' themselves. To paraphrase it as a whole, this band was 'immature'. They were a 'childish' act for children to enjoy... and this was "wrong". That is what drove me to make this thread. Has an idea poisoned many (Although I am sure some just didn't like the music, each to their own) listeners that they can't be associated with something 'immature' and attack this sort of music? That to do like such a thing will make them uneducated and part of the fashion freaks? Is there a little truth to this idea or has this album been savagely reviewed simply because many people found it to there liking (despite selling a ton more than their last, not a measure of quality I know but surely indicator they appeal to a large number)

We Are Young doing so well in the charts probably had something to do with it. I haven't heard their previous album but I wasn't overly fond of this one (I'd give it a 2-2.5) so I guess that score isn't as shocking to me. Their Queen rip off was "fun" (first or second track can't remember) but I can't stand We Are Young and as a whole I think the album is ineffective. Killers did this schtick much better.

They come across as absolute wussies in concert and their use of auto-tune is a bit excessive on this album; but otherwise, i'm not sure why they're ripped on RYM (although i don't go there) and receive nearly no love on BEA. Considering their debut and prior release as The Format, i don't understand the "immature" tag at all. _________________ fav artists NOW | ALL-TIME favs | i listen 2 more music than u so u don't have 2!

I thought it was an average album, 6/10.
It's probably getting killed because it got mainstream success, as Jhereko said. _________________ Doubles & Conch

I personally think the album is weak and a bit overproduced but I have to admit that there are far better songs than We are young, as about it being childish well I guess I would still take it over any Emerson, Lake & Palmer stuff which is surely more mature and absolutely more pretencious and boring.
I'd say this album is inconsecuential but I wouldn't go as far to call it trash... _________________ This is the life we choose, the life we lead, and there is only one guarantee: None of us will see heaven. . .

I was forced to listen to this whole album on a road trip with a few of my friends who really like it. It was atrocious.

I finally bought this album just last week, it's very good. I still prefer The Darkness for this kind of thing but there's nothing wrong with this.
