Some words of explanation on my pick. I wanted to showcase some good French rap, and Akhenaton is the most prominent MC from one of the two most important French rap bands : I AM, from Marseilles. I AM started in the early 90s, their sound and imagery (martial arts, chess games, etc.) is very much influenced by Wu-Tang Clan (there's a Wu-Tang featuring on their classic album L'Ecole du micro d'argent, 1997). Akhenaton's first solo effort (Métèque et mat, 1995) is very good and stands the test of time, "Je suis peut-être" ("I May Be") is a self-deprecatory ego trip that's very funny. If I remember well, I have also nominated another French rap song, from one the best underground bands around, La Rumeur, I'll tell you more about them when their turn comes.
