Best overlooked artist that is also well-known...

If there was such a category, I think solo artists get the worst wrap.

Beck, Paul Simon, and Donovan I think are horribly underrated when compared to their contemporaries that are bands. Contemporary meaning in the same time/movement. Is it because they aren't in a band? How did Bob Dylan or other solo artists escape this? Or is this phenomenon only in my head?

For example:
Beck vs. Nirvana, Radiohead,
Paul Simon and Donovan vs. The Beatles and Bob Dylan

I'd also like to throw Tom Petty into this mix. He gets a lot more recognition now, but not as much early on. Another would be Rory Gallagher. I'd put him with the likes of Hendrix and Clapton.

Another person who did escape this misfortune though: David Bowie.

I would also agree with Tom Petty, although I think he is somewhere in the middle with overall acceptance.

Tom Petty gets overlooked because he's perceived as simple Americana.

Hey, why complain about Beck when you could be Spacemen 3, The Sundays, or the Pastels?

Other bands I'd put in this category:

Tom Petty(I agree on this one)
Beck(I agree since it's accurate, but there are bands who get it worse)
Cake
Everclear
Dropkick Murphys
And you will know us by trail of dead
MuteMath
Fall Out Boy
Huskur Du
Primus
and plenty more

Zappa maybe.
Also, there should be a "who" instead of "that" in the thread title.

Joanna Newsom, Talk Talk maybe.

Big on this site, but I've never heard them mentioned away from the internet.

Have very little last.fm listeners as well.
