Post your thoughts on music in general. How has music impacted your life? Do you greatly hold music above other forms of entertainment? Do originality and innovation determine your opinion of music? Do you believe that subjective opinions on music should be based on objective qualities? Do you have any other thoughts on music? Why does the narwhal bacon?

Music is an art form that one can not only listen to and be touched by, but one you can MOVE to, in another art form called DANCE. You can't MOVE to a play, or a painting, or a poem. That's what makes music different from everything else.

I've always been a big music lover, and I can't believe I know people who aren't into music. Music had always been a big part of society, and it's been a part of my life ever since I saw my first Disney movie, then my first Kansas album, then another thing and another thing.

Only if you're going for a critic perspective, and not an enjoyment perspective.

btw, I think this is a genius thread, Joj! 👏

Music is my life. If I can't live the rest of my life with making music in some form as my primary focus, I will consider my life a failure. Everything I ever feel has a musical equivalent to it, and any emotion I ever have I process with music. I literally could not function without music. I feel like looking at music should be mainly subjective since it is a subjective form of media, but there should be some objective reasoning into liking certain bands and albums. But yeah, music, I love it.

Music is easily the most important thing in my life. I can see myself giving up most things in life if I absolutely needed to. Music is not one of those things. It's brought new meaning to my life.

Nah, I mean I go on imgur a lot which is pretty much reddit. Your persona screams /b/ though, so I just thought it was funny that you used a trademark reddit meme (given the relationship between those two boards) and posted accordingly.

Anyways, on topic. I wouldn't hold music aesthetically higher than traditional art, literature, performance art, film, etc. but it is certainly the art that I spend the most time with. It certainly has the ability to bring me up and down emotionally, as those other artforms do. I don't even remotely consider innovation or originality when listening to music, but simply how it sounds and the content of the lyrics (if there are any). As far as the whole objectivity thing, I feel that it is silly to believe anything other than that an individual's perception of music (or any other art) is subjective; you can statistically approach a general consensus, as this site does for music, but that will still never please everyone.

Music is the art form which speaks the most to me. I find it to be one of the most abstract art forms. I hold music above other art forms, but that's mostly because I'm very ignorant of the other branches of art. Music affects my daily life enormously - most of the time I'm either listening to music, talking about music, playing music or thinking about music.

I believe music has objective qualities. However, these objective qualities aren't "good" or "bad" by themselves, but gain significance on the mind of the listener. So we can objectively say "this song is longer/louder/morecomplex/higherpitched/slower/moredifficulttounderstand" but that's not intrinsically good or bad. So yeah, there's not one best ever album which's name is written in stone, but rather one favorite album for each person which changes over time. Therefore, the closest we can get to speaking about objectivity is BEA - the sum of (almost) everyone's opinion.

Scaruffi's a dick, but he has good taste.

Something I've been pondering about lately: Is ALL music art? What defines a song/album/piece as a piece of art? The "artiness" of something is defined by the creator or the beholder?

Does anybody have an insightful essay/paper/text/definition/whatever on what art may be? I've got no idea about what it is, but I don't deny the existence of it
