Seeing as we already have "official" promoters for most genres and countries, from whom I've learned about huge amounts of awesome music I wouldn't have otherwise, I'm going to start dropping off what I consider the best music out of Peru.

Peru has a weird music scene. It's a very culturally and racially varied country, having seen immigrants from all over the world, so we have a musical landscape with plenty of different influences. These usually don't mix too much, but when they do so the results are very interesting. We have Spanish (and European) influences, which can be seen in the best harmonies and in stringed instruments such as the guitar; African influences, which can be seen on the great rhythms; and Andean influences, which can be seen on the best melodies and atmospheres.

For the last century, however, Peruvian culture has suffered of an idolization of American culture, though. Most mainstream modern rock/pop acts are merely copies from US bands from 10 years prior. The underground scene, however, holds quite a few gems which take more from our musical past and influences and less from the northern hemisphere's commercially successful acts.

I'll try to leave stuff here as much as possible, but we definitely don't have near as much music as most developed countries, and college eats up much of my time, so I might take some time between recommendation and recommendation. I might also post music from neighbor countries, seeing as many music is similar and they are also underrepresented here.

tl;dr: Defago's gonna post Peruvian music every once in a while.

El Polen - Fuera de la Ciudad (Out of the City)

Link

Interesting mix of psychedelic music with classical Andean folk music. This is probably my favorite Peruvian album of all time. The lyrics play an important part, though. They mostly deal with the Incas' legendarium, a series of folkloric legends and myths adapted to song. This would be a mix of the Andean influence I mentioned earlier with the more modern sounds coming from the US/UK during the seventies.

If anyone needs a link let me know.

(I think I've posted this one before)

I'm aware of her, and I've listened to some of her stuff, but I'm not too well listened on her. What I've heard I've liked a lot. She's actually the Minister of Culture atm.

Really? Gee, I knew she had achieved some sort of institutional status, but I wasn't aware of this. Anyway, I really dig the two records by her I know. The only other Peruvian artist I know is Yma Sumac (♥), I'll be following this thread for more recs. Thanks for the idea!
