I was very pleasantly surprised by Apple's last, by far her best IMO. On the other hand, The Golden Archipelago really disappointed me, I had very fond memories of Winged Life, I felt this one was somewhat boring. I shall go with Fiona Apple.
Damn, I love both albums so much so this one is a really hard choice for me. Golden Archipelago is an achingly beautiful album that uses perfect landscapes to examine how unperfect people are. The Idler Wheel is a cathartic and astutely percussive journey through some crazy bitch's psyche.
At the moment I'm leaning toward's Apple's work but only slightly...doesn't really matter actually as this'll be a landslide victory.

The Idler Wheel <3 What a great fucking ride that album is. That crazy woman writes some intricate, gorgeously original melodies to fit perfectly along side her equally maniacle and imaginary lyrics. One of the brightest moments of 2012, an album that is sure to stand the test of time.
The Golden Archipelago is like watching the sun set on a beach. It's not exciting and nothing particularily catches you off guard, but some of the best moments in life happen when you just sit back and take in your surroundings. And that's what this album is; it's an escape. Its an escape from everything. Just lay down in a meadow and look at the clouds or watch the rain fall from the sky. Sometimes we're too obsessed with doing things and being productive or efficient. The Golden Archipelago is the soundtrack to waking up super early just to skip rocks on a calm lake. And people dont skip rocks enough these days.
Neither album excite me. Particularly The Golden Archipelago. It just doesn't feel fresh in any way to me. Fiona Apple gives a bit of an impressionable vocal performance though, so I'm going with that album.
