I don't know how I stumbled into Cymbals Eat Guitars, but they definitely have elements of bands like Pavement and Modest Mouse before them. A lot of focus on the contrast of loud vs soft, fast vs slow, and noisy vs melodic. All in all, I was very impressed with their debut and I hope for good things going forward.
People probably have heard of Blut aus Nord more from their recent 777 trilogy and if you know what those sound like then cool. But Ultima Thulee sounds nothing like them.
Rather than talk much about the album (im doing a write-up for the 1001 albums anyways) ill just share a few stories on why this album is so great to me.
Last year sometime me and some friends went to our buddies cabin and just got right ruined. Like super drunk and super stoned. Everyone passed out watching Super Troopers and I was still wide awake as heck. So rather than go to bed I listened to this and took a walk in the dark. Scared the fucking hell out of me. Behind this guys cabin is a fairly large clearing surrounded by a ton of trees. I walked through the clearing and into the trees and there was a smaller clearing not too far in. In the middle of the clearing was this one spruce tree. The perfect tree. The moonlight literally just shone on this one tree that all the others circled around. At this point im pretty sure I was listening My Prayer Beyond Ginnungagap which just added to the awe. Everything about this tree in my mind was perfect. Perfect height. Perfect branches. It was just standed straight up, glowing. I dont even remember going to sleep that night just remember chilling at this tree listening to Ultima Thulee and probably crying. God damn whatta tree.
Another was a drunk time in the middle of winter where me and my buddy shared a cab home and he got dropped off first but didnt give me enough money for the cab (or atleast my drunk self thought). When we left his house I was like fuck i dont have the money for this asked him to pull over and he was like ok thatll be $7, even though there was like 40 still left on the machine. I gave him the money confused as fuck and I was just stranded in the middle of winter like an hour walk away from my house with just a sweater on. Ultima Thulee time. I fucking sprinted the whole way home listening to this not wanting to look behinnd me because black metal is scary stuff at night. I wiped hard a couple times too which i realized more the next morning with crusted blood on my sweater. I got home right as the final song ended and ive been drunkenly running home in the winter to black songs albums ever since
So ya vote Ultima Thulee if only because of the perfect tree.
Why is this obese house cat growling at me? It keeps disrupting some perfectly good instrumental metal.
Seriously though. I just can't get past vocals on this record. Musically there are some really phenomenal moments. and then the demonic howl comes in and overpowers the rest of the song.
I'm voting for Ultima Thulee in this round because when the cat stops growling, I quite like it.
Cymbals Eat Guitars are a promising young new york indie rock band that sound like pretty much most good indie rock bands form the 90s. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

Compared to other black metal albums the shrieking is much less frequent and not really overpowering. In fact I think Ultima Thulee does a good job at blending the vocals and instrumentals together.
And I think of it more as painful than demonic. I certainly wouldnt like the album as much without the shrieks

I think that's why I liked it better than most black metal records and voted for it. But I did think the shrieking was produced very up front in the mix, more so than blending in. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

I guess I meant that the two (vocals + instrumentals) compliment each other well. I dont see the shrieks being overwhelming but then again I might be desensitized to black metal vocals by now.
