  • Post subject: Rules & Nominations - Best Album Not In The Top 2000 Ran
  • Reply with quote
...also known as the 2KT for simplicity.

Seeing as the Best New Music Album is postponed/on hiatus, I've decided to start the nomination phase to a little tournament. The matches themselves will begin later, probably mid July, as I have vacations for a month and can dedicate my whole existence to you, my loved BEAners.

The idea is that each user nominates albums, I make a bracket, we do matches, stuff gets knocked out, and we get a winner. Hopefully we'll even get to finish this one, it's about time a tournament actually ended around here.

Anyways, the rules:

-Each user can nominate two (2) albums. This amount may change depending on the amount of users nominating. I'm aiming for 64 maximum albums, but we can work around this.
-Said albums must not be present in BEA's top 2000 ranked albums at the moment of posting this.
-Said albums must not have been made by a band in BEA's top 200 rated bands at the moment of posting this.
-Said albums must not have been released after the moment of posting this.
-Said albums must comply with BEA's database's rules.
-I'll be working with a first come first serve basis.

Aside from that, anything goes. I will have to ask you guys two things, though.

1) Please, try not to choose extremely long albums. So far I'm not going to enforce this, but please don't get 24 hour long albums. The idea of this contest is that everyone listens to every album nominated, and as they will tend to be unknown gems, we'll have much to listen to before long. 12 hour albums aren't really the most convenient. Try to keep it up to 2 hours, please.
2) Try to choose your albums not as a way to win, but as a way to get people to listen to the best, the most underrated music you know. The point isn't to win, but for us all to find new stuff.

Mechanics:

I will randomize all nominations into two brackets, and then it's a simple knockout style tournament. I will open 4 matches when the tournament starts, wait a few hours or until both captains post their promotions, open the polls, and depending how everything goes, close the matches between two to three days later. I will save my vote for the last moment before closing, so I can avoid complicated ties. In case my vote would bring the match to a tie, I won't vote that round.

Anyone can promote any albums, but it's expected of each album's captain to take charge. It is not required, but will definitely affect votes.

Dates (in theory):

Nominations will open in a few hours, I will make a post announcing this on this same thread.
They will close in a few days, after either we get enough albums or it becomes evident no more people will nominate.
I'll post a complete bracket during the week, and then it's listening time.
The first match will start on the 22nd of July, but this date may change with time.

Once again, guys. This tournament's objective is for all to find new music they enjoy. If at least one person likes whatever I pick, I'm satisfied. If I find at least one new great album, I'm happy. Please do listen to as many of other people's nominations as you can, so as to make this more fun.

Have fun!

Also, this rules may change. Any questions and/or suggestions are appreciated.

Wait did you want us to start nominating here? This is probably going to be my favorite tournament yet.

Did y'all want me to go ahead and put up a nomination thread for the Best Debut Album Tourney or wait a little while? Not trying to push my idea to the front or anything, just trying to see what everyone wants Laughing

I'd wait a bit, this isnt gonna "start for a month", so people can listen to all the albums, so if you wanna wait untill the nominations for this one are over, that would be the time.

Might be a bit late to ask this (and maybe it already has Anxious ) but could we push the limit to 2K? I've just been looking and there's still a lot of pretty well known stuff from 1000-1999? Just a thought.

I actually talked about this with him, he's using a spreadsheet to easily determine if people's nominations fit the criteria, and the overall chart only goes up to 1000, so he would have to individually look up the album on BEA for each one, which kind of defeats the purpose of the spreadsheet.

I personally don't mind either way, my nominations are all in the 5000+ range.
