I got two questions in this thread:

1. Do you think you personally will be able to listen to every album ever made?

2. How far is Best Ever Albums from cataloguing every album that has been recorded up until 2012? Are we getting close do you think?

Even if there are 1%- 2% of the all the albums on here the website has come quite far I would say. Smile

1. Not a chance

2. For every album by Radiohead or even British Sea Power there's going to be hundreds maybe even thousands of album by artists and bands who are still trying hard to break into the mainstream. Even some with record deals will go under the radar because of bad marketing or lack of interest.
I'm not sure BEA actually needs to catalogue every album - it's not about that, it's about ranking albums. Likelihood is these albums are still underground for a reason; the content of BEA is crafting according to the people that use it by adding albums to charts as they see fit.

1. You're not seriously asking, are you? How many albums do you think are released in the whole world in the time it takes you to listen to just one?

2. We're not getting close, and getting further than ever. Too many records released every day for anyone to be able to follow up.

1. well I have personally listened to every album ever conceived, its exhausting but certainty doable. I was able to do this by mind jacks and hypersleep, I would explain further but I'm not going to bore you with the details

2. No clue other then super far away, I lost count around 15 million but if I were to throw out a number of total number of albums produced Id say 30-40 million

It's impossible to listen to everything and impossible to catalogue it all as well. There are millions of possible albums that could be on here, but our users have filtered this down to about 30,000. The site originally started as a way for people to filter out the best albums. Custom charts have diluted this a little bit.

Maybe if humanity gains some sort of collective consciousness, through some sort of chip planted in everyone's brain that gives us the ability to instantaneously gain the information of all other people's experiences on this planet. Then maybe we could have both the knowledge and (artificial?) experience of all albums that ever existed. I guess.

Yeah, but then listening to music wouldn't have sense. The point of listening to music is to try to interpret the artist's creation in your own individual way. If everybody knew every album and had everybody's same experience, then everybody would experience albums the exact same way. Sounds really sad to me...

Listening to every album is as impossible as getting to the end of the internet.

I was making shit up, but yea, we'd be more machine than human. I see art as a very human thing and I would prefer to always discover it organically, even if I only ever get to hear less than 0.01% of it all.
