I keep hearing the band name Joanna Gruesome. I hate that band name along with other similar names like Slam Donahue, Com Truise. But it got me thinking. What are some of your choices for Best band names? and Worst?

Best: The Who, The Grateful Dead, Electric Light Orchestra, the Band, Funkadelic
Worst: Paul and Paula, Snoop Lion, KC and the Sunshine Band, Blondie

Great band names:

Black Flag - Evokes an image of leading an army on the march, likely a rebellion. More or less what they did.
The Clash - They were constantly at odds with some kind of establishment, whether it was mainstream society or the punk community. Besides, any revolutionary band should dream of getting to be called "The Clash."
Dirty Projectors - It's a perfect description of the way I envision their musical process. This band has talent out the wazoo, but the listener is never given a clear view.

To me, the worst band names are those that give a false impression of what their music sounds like. Some that come to mind:

My Bloody Valentine - if you're going to give your band the name of a horror film, make sure you're a metal band
U2 - This is way too cool of a name for a band that sounds so... ordinary.
Japandroids - When I hear this, I think "electronic music for anime."
Neutral Milk Hotel - Sounds like they took a random number generator to the dictionary. Comes off as flaky and trying too hard.

Not saying anything about the music, though. Three of the four in the "worst" section are in my top 100.

Worst band name by far is 'Crispy Ambulance'.... Even Tony Wilson told them that when he signed them!

Great music though

Also not keen on 'Ned's Atomic Dustbin'.. Just think its a big naff!

My favourite band name is probably 'Peter and The Testtube Babies' - although musically less of a fan!
