I recently made a playlist of BestEverAlbums.com's top 50 songs and I listened through them and I was surprised at how many of them just fade out at the end. Sometimes I feel like this leaves the songs unfinished and seems like they didn't know what to do with it or how to end it. At times i see how fading out contributes to the song but other times im left disappointed.

What do you think about the use of fading out in songs?

It drives me crazy. Albums like Blonde on Blonde and Rumours would be virtually flawless were it not for all the fadeouts.

However, it can occasionally be done extremely well. For example:

Exactly what sweden said. I'm not much of a vinyl fan, but I love my vinyl copy of YHF because Pot Kettle Black actually ends on it rather than fading out like it does on the CD.

I usually hate fading out, but some songs make it work.

Free Bird is a good example. They couldn't think of a way to end the song so just fade it out.

I don't like it usually.

An example when I don't like fade out:

and an another one when it works:

Sometimes it sounds like a lazy/uninspired way to finish a song, and at other times it sounds really good, as if the song never wanted to end and still existed somewhere far away when the next song is already playing. Pretty cool effect when the song has a catchy heady melody or cool guitar laces (e.g. "Some Girls Are Bigger than Others"). Which doesn't mean it's not a lazy way to finish the song anyway.

I can't remember the last time I liked a song and was bothered by the ending.

Actually, on occasion I come across a song that ends abruptly in a way where I wonder if there is something wrong with my mp3 file.

I try not to get too hung up on this. If I did it would ruin a lot of songs for me.

I've never been a fan of it. I mean, even if it just means you do something simple to resolve it, just end it. I kind of understand fadeouts in songs where it's just going crazy and everyone's basically jamming and stuff, but still, they ended it in real life at some point, I assume, why not just keep recording it?

I mean, it's not going to ruin a song for me, it's just a pet peeve.
