I'm sure Entroducing will win and all, but 16 Horsepower should are still incredible. I've been completely obsessed with them for the last few months, this album in particular. They make dark country/americana influenced by stuff like Nick Cave and Joy Division as much as old folk music. Singer David Eugene Edwards has possibly the most intense, entrancing voices I've ever heard, and he more or less uses it to spout his rather passionate Christian beliefs...which is in no way a bad thing when it ends up in ghastly vocals singing stuff like "Every man is evil, every man a liar" or "If I die by your hand, I gotta home in glory land! Yeah!" (the last song Strong Man even takes lyrics from an old hymn and puts them against lines such as "each last breath come from his mouth, I'll beat out with a stick")

Like the lyrics continually end up being the most charmingly grim things in the world. The evil of man, sin, death, violence ect. And the music is great too, eerie syncopated banjo riffs, skeletal slide guitars which jump between minor chords with wild abandon, and the bass/drums always find creative individual ways of working around the lead instrument. Its about as creative as the music could get given the genre constraints. And the singer has the coolest voice ever.

Hey I'll throw a vote 16 Horsepower's way. I love Endtroducing, but I somehow feel it's aged a bit, plus for once I'll go for the obvious underdog, and 16 Horsepower deserve a little bit of listening, most notably if you're a Gun Club fan.

Another vote for Sackcloth.

Endtroducing is awesome, but I absolutely love 16 Horsepower. Like Norman mentioned, all you Gun Club fans should love this record. I prefer Sackcloth over anything The Gun Club ever did.

Dang, I'd never heard either of these before, and I really like them both... I'd be happy to see either move on to the next round.

Abstain, I think.

EDIT: Nah, I'll vote for 16 Horsepower.

And wovenhand! The Threshingfloor, Mosaic, and the self-titled are all as good as anything 16 horsepower did.

Both my nominees out in the worst round Laughing , but both put up a pretty good fights against well known opponents, and I think they got a few new listeners, so all is well.
