Fifties: Doris Day-Because Elvis would be too easy of a choice, and her music is among the less annoying of this painful decade.
Sixties: Jimi Hendrix-Because I'm saving Pink Floyd for the seventies, and the Beatles would be too easy. He made some awesome riffs, even though his recording quality hasn't survived the ages.
Seventies:Pink Floyd-They created some of the greatest gapless albums of all time.
Eighties: Metallica-Because hair sucked, and Michael Jackson's stuff wasn't quite as awesome as James' and Cliff's.
Nineties:Tori Amos-I'm obsessed with her, and consider Little Earthquakes to be the most amazing thing in the universe.
Oughts: Avril Lavigne-I was gonna say Animal Collective for this, but then I realized how repetitive so many of their songs were early on. All three of Avril's albums have a different "sound", and are amazing for different reasons.

Not quite the only one, just my favorite.
I edited mine only to add more decades.
Just might have the hill sisters and their respective kindergarden classes for the 1890s. They created quite the beast of a song.
