In this age where we no longer rely on official sources like the Grammys or rolling stone to tell us what the best albums are currently or in the past.We have our own ranking sites like BEA,RYM to let our own selections be the staple for the consensus on best albums of all time.
With our charts and lists including "better albums"that were perhaps more underground in the past and ignored by the old music publications.Is it possible now that certain albums lose their status as classic and gets relegated to be just average?
An example would be when rolling stone "updates their top 500".
Some albums i had in mind.Tapestry,Hotel California and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
I honestly don't believe an album will lose its 'acclaimed' statute. It ís true that the large internet community is somewhat looking for different albums, but the 'old' albums won't be forgotten/lost. The community doesn't shifts it's interests, but instead broadens its view. Well, at least for the next 20 years. Also, I see a possible exeption for bands that rely heavily on a live reputation (grateful dead?) but whose albums are harder to get into.

Was there ever an age when people where happy to be told what's best, especially by either the Grammys or Rolling Stone?
New albums. Albums that come out to tremendous acclaim and are snatched up like crazy. Once the hype dies down and people realize it really isn't all that great, the album loses its acclaimed status. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

Babel was once ranked third best album of 2012 on BEA. It's still top 20, but dropping from third to eighteenth is certainly a big dip.
