I know we've got a vast assortment of tourneys going on and upcoming, but I was trying to remember if we've ever had a Best Solo Artist tournament. Did a search but couldn't find anything.

So if we haven't, anybody be up for it? Say, August/September '14?

I like the idea. Bands get enough love here. I guess we'll need to figure out how to define solo, since solo artists rarely do it all themselves.

I was thinking if someone had two solo releases (as registered on BEA) they would qualify, even if they're usually backed up by a band. By this logic, Bruce Springsteen and Jimi Hendrix would qualify, whereas Huey Lewis & The News would not.

But there'll be plenty of time to iron out the details.

hmm. Springsteen I can understand. his early stuff was relatively solo, but Hendrix was part of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Those other guys contributed a lot.

off the top of my head, I'm thinking some major picks would be...

Bob Dylan
Leonard Cohen
PJ Harvey
John Fahey
Joanna Newsom
Miles Davis
Charles Mingus
Neil Young
Vashti Bunyan
Syd Barrett
Robert Wyatt
Kanye West
Nas
Ghostface Killah
Sufjan Stevens
and of course James Otto

Not forgetting
Elliott Smith
Nick Drake
Kendrick Lamar
John Coltrane
John Lennon

Well as I said, if they have two solo albums to their name on BEA's databse, I was thinking I'd allow it. Hendrix has

The Cry Of Love by Jimi Hendrix

and

Valleys Of Neptune by Jimi Hendrix

along with a few other non-compilation albums. These are posthumous, sure, but not compilations.

True. I have a tendency to dismiss posthumous albums for whatever reason.
