Is this possible? I don't really want to re-start up another album-based tournament, and I think it would just be really interesting to see another side of BEA's artistic taste get the spotlight in a tournament. And the best year in music tournament was some of the most fun I had here on BEA, so I thought it might be time to go bold and try to do a Best Year in Movies tournament! or is it possible?
I think the biggest question is how to verify movie's year, and I would definitely be open to suggestions (IMDB release, release in it's native country etc). Also how it would be structured: just go knockout or do a sort of playoff brackets where the captain of each year would choose different films and possibly spotlight performances, photography, musical scores etc. I like the latter but that might be too ambitious and flood the users with too many movies to see. I know taking time to watch a movie is often a much bigger investment than listening to an album (for the most part), but during these winter months we might see some more willing particpants.
And this thread is basically a free-for-all: to both see if there's interest and listen to any idea that might be put forth. I was very overjoyed that people put all the effort into the favorite movies from each year you we're born thread, so that made this idea that has been kind of lingering for a while actually seem possible.
Anyways, feedback people, I will listen to anything
I'm definitely in, though I'd maybe suggest keeping it to two or three movies at a time as films take longer to consume than albums. Also, I call dibs on 1973.
I agree about the year thing being tricky. I just always go with USA release date for my personal lists, but that obviously doesn't make sense for something like this. Release date in the film's native country makes the most sense to me.
I think we definitely have enough regular movie watchers here to make this work. The problem is coming up with the rules, not just about determining what year a movie was released, but also what do we vote on. I think what we had in the music year tourney with the teams was pretty cool, but we have to be careful there, because it also got really complicated as it went along. But something along those lines - the "captains" chose their teams, different movies for each match. Also, I really liked the group stages that we had there. I'd consider that again. Also, I think it makes more sense if we do this with the teams. And then when we go to the elimination phases, you're allowed to re-use movies again.

Also, this reminds me... We never finished that, did we?
Also, I agree with revolver94. Let's try and agree on the rules first before nominating, okay?
