This does excel in places and it did have a lot of potential to be great, but about half of the time I'm bored by it.

Whenever I listen to Oberst, I imagine Jack making jerk-off motions with his hand.
Once I purge that image from my head, though, I tend to enjoy his stuff. Ironically, the parts that sound the most genuinely emotional are those where he's the most restrained.

I also heard the Cassadaga album for the first time recently and it was good album too. The song 'Soul Singer In A Session Band' stuck with me. Singer really does have his way with words.

He has. Maybe an EP would be his best format? On the length of a Long-Playing, I sometimes get bored, like Hazey said.

That moment your favourite album is album of the day! 
Bright Eyes is my favourite band, and Conor Oberst my favourite musician. There is such a wealth to his lyrics its a challenge to digest it all. Heck, it took me over a decade to finally get the Tim Kasher pun in "Nothing Gets Crossed Out". As whiny and immature sounding as Oberst's voice may be at times, he is asking all the profound questions. Does the soul exist? If its all determinism, what utility is there in effort? How can a non-believer resolve the vacuum of salvation in their lives? I wish more albums were as intelligent, as emotional, and as personal as this.
