Okay, it seems my nomination is up against some stiff competition. So here's why you should vote for Laura Marling.
First off, she's one of the most talented songwriters I've ever heard, especially when you consider her age. Her albums cover themes of mythology, mortality, and despair among many other topics.
She also uses unusual guitar tunings to allow her guitar to make sounds not commonly heard.
Howard, even if we're only going by his solo work, all have been great discoveries. Just fascinating. Ive liked Laura Marling's work from what Ive heard, perhaps an album or two more and this matchup would be a harder decision.
So Rowland S. Howard is a huge influence for many alternative musicians in Australia. I myself knew nothing about him until two years ago. Mainly this song drew me in.
So many covers done of this song and never realised he wrote it as a dandy 16 year old.
Rowland worked with The Birthday Party, The Immaculate Consumptive, Crime + The City Solution and These Immortal Souls. All great projects in their own right. However his solo work carried a tinge of despair and uniqueness that was Rowland S. Howard.
Rowland S Howard will always be one of the most underrated guitarists in the history of popular music. While he was great at creating a kind of all-consuming, high-reverb, blunt sense of doom, he could really just tear up a song like no other, and both of those extremes deuled beautifully on his solo albums, especially on Teenage Snuff Film
