As weird as it is looking back, this was one of the first records (alongside Ryan Adams' Heartbreaker and Drive-by Truckers' The Dirty South) to kindle an interest in alt-country which led me to some of my favorite records (Rainy Day Music, Sackcloth 'N' Ashes, etc.) I also thought it was fairly boring on my first listen which obviously changed over time since my initial listen in 2005.

Truly one of the best of the best. Jeff Tweedy and company's masterpiece. This album is rich and layered and ably, very ably, covers a wide palate of sounds and emotions and styles. Seamlessly mixes pop and avant-garde elements; blues and rock styles, utter despair with nostalgic joy, defeat and triumph. This is a very complete artistic peice.

How can I express how much I love this album and why? There have only been a very few albums that influenced me in my teenage years or any years of my life like this did. The lyrics struck a chord with me. They were poetic and abstract yet also sometimes very soft. And the messages expressed throughout are very mixed. The album really sounds like a beautiful soundtrack to life and to trying to come to an understanding of what you are doing and why.

But really the beauty of this album is in the details, the little far off horns and sounds and things that float in and leave like some sort of dream, the desolate echo effect on "Ashes of American Flags", the hectic and agitated ending of "War on War", the deep apathy and sadness on the majority of "Radio Cures" which rises up into hopeful yearning at the end, the perfect resolution of the closer "Reservations" where Tweedy seems to have finally found his stable truth in his crazy life - "I've got reservations about so many things but not about you." Yeah, this album is a godsend.
