Thanks, I don't know if I'll see it in theaters yet, or just wait until it's available on streaming.

Scaruffi just gave it an official rating (hyperlinked, with review) of 6.5 which is a solid recommendation combined with yours. He also says nothing but good things (or at least nothing critical) about it so maybe it has potential to get a little bit higher rating even from him (sometimes he adjusts them by a few points or more soon after posting a rating or later on as he watches more from that year or from that director).

Regardless of what Scaruffi (or anyone else) says (about ANYTHING)...go see it for yourself. Points and ratings be damned. LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the end, Scaruffi knows nothing more than you do, and Scaruffi's opinion means no more than yours does. You don't need him. In fact, your opinion means more without his factored in.

DO IT!

Okay okay Romanelli, but you're "yelling" as if it's some sort of earth shattering masterpiece 🤣 🤣

(which I suppose is possible)

Where did I say I wasn't going to see it anyway??? 🤔

Chill guys, it's just a Barbie movie ... For $14 ... Or free (or maybe a few bucks) in a matter of weeks...

Ultimately what Scaruffi says may not matter once I see it. After all, maybe I'll think it surpasses Citizen Kane... 🤥

...But he is an excellent source because I end up agreeing with him (or close, within less than a half point) about 80% of the time, and this naturally helps me pre-select what to see as a priority and saves me a lot of wasted time and money when there is no way I can watch every movie ever made (nor would want to). It helps me watch most, nearly all, of the very good or best ones however.

I will say comedies tend to be our least point of close agreement (avg drops to probably more like 2/3rds), so Barbie has that going for it. And like I said, Facetious saying it could land in the 7s or 7.3s is a pretty good indication that I might think similarly (because he is also quite familiar with my criteria and ratings and isn't often far off with recs).

Gonna give a shout-out to Mario's father Melvin Van Peebles here, especially his films Watermelon Man and Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song.

Right on, do you think Blaxploitation films (in general) should be eligible for the Hood/Gangster list? Obviously, I don't mean those that clearly or probably aren't (like Blacula or something), but I wonder if Blaxploitation is sometimes or maybe often (at least partially) just replacing what would now be called a Hood or Gangster film in its earlier incarnations. I don't know if I've ever seen one with both "Blaxploitation" and "Hood" as its MAIN genre tags (occasionally "Hood" is a sub tag) on RYM. And Blaxploitation is a genre I've only barely explored (but intend to at some point, and maybe this list would be a good start if there are enough that could or should be added).

Maybe change "gangster/hood" to the broader "crime/gangster/hood;" a lot of Blaxploitation could easily count, including Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song which I think is often credited with inventing the genre.

Possibly, and I'm sure that would allow them all or mostly onto my list, but "crime" opens up the list to way too many (not so congruent, or too un-specific) sub-genres that I don't necessarily want as it would water down the idea a little bit too much (now all of a sudden every noir film qualifies, every cop film, many Hitchcock films, etc, that have very little to do with the main idea). The idea behind it being Gangster and Hood is that those two are often two sides of the same coin. Hood films typically feature youths growing up in the environment or product of gangsters or as gangsters themselves (typically lower class of gangsters), while Gangster films are more often that of the Mob (a typically higher class of gangsters in terms of wealth, business dealings, etc).

Actually, fwiw -- more to the core of my intent -- is that a good friend ("in real life", not a user of this site) loves hip hop music and that is pretty much all he listens to and pretty much all he truly loves in art (with some occasional exceptions). He recently started getting a little bit more into cinema (partially from my urging and from some of our conversations), so I was inspired to put together this list not just for my own interest and revisits and to fill it up some more, but for him, because it would feature a high percentage of films from all decades (and across the majority of my ratings scale) that would be likely to quickly appeal to him, and would take him across both mainstream films and more artistic or unique films, doing a pretty good job of introducing him to cinema in a way that holds his interest as a stepping stone with as little resistance as possible, and perhaps allows him to more easily segue into other great films in other genres from there.

I went back in this thread and found the miscellaneous genre/sub-genre lists I've worked on sporadically over the last year or so and added links to them on the main (most recent) "Top 10 of the Week" post (a page or so back from this). These links will now be carried over and included on each "Top 10 of the Week" until they are moved (as more "official" lists) into their "proper" thread (ex: all the film genre lists, assuming I want to keep them, will eventually be moved over to my "Greatest Films" thread, and linked to there ... etc). But for now they will be featured here, mainly because they are partially or largely in early stages (especially as I am still getting more used to and working out the precision of my ratings below 6.8/10) and a fairly high percentage of the entries are tentative ratings, based on viewings years ago (sometimes several years) and need revisits (usually noted next to the entry) before they're more "official" and the list itself can be considered a bit more complete.

Anyway, they're now much easier to find and jump to instead of just being buried in the thread. If I start more exclusively focusing on one of them, I will bump said genre list up to the front of the thread (and update its link to that one) but even if I'm not I sometimes still update them even if they're way back in the thread and I'm not devoting much time and effort to them exclusively. In any case, they can be jumped to rapidly by anyone that wants to look over them, and of course comments/recommendations for any are always welcome whether I am focusing on the one you want to talk about or not (of course, as usual, what I'm focusing on will usually get the better responses from me than something I'm not).
